If your kids refuse sauce on their pasta, try serving it as a "dip" instead to give them control while making it fun! Sauce is a great way to sneak in veggies, but make sure you check the label for hidden added sugars.

Talk about a taste of summer and a perfect day for an outdoor nutritional health lesson! These 4th-8th graders (tomato choppers came in late and missed the video opp) made a delicious Watermelon Tomato Salad today for our last lesson of the school year. All had seconds with many even going for thirds!

And that's a wrap on a year-long weekly Nutritional Health class for these scholars! Today we played a matching game to review and identify all the fruits & veggies (including the tricky ones that are actually both). During the taste test of peaches, kiwis, and watermelons, we had fun with fruit and veggie crossword puzzles to practice the spelling of all these delicious foods.

The Veggie Lady loves teaching kids about ways they can help with mealtime. Yesterday some childcare cuties practiced fine motor skills by learning how to fold napkins and set the table. You should have seen how proud they were when the setting was complete! I filled their plates with peaches, kiwis, and grape tomatoes as a reward. Praise and reward are so important when it comes to nutrition education ❤️

Check out these middle school cheffy chefs! Today they tackled some healthy, delicious, sweet potato/black bean quesadillas on verbal instruction alone (no paper recipe this time). From the buttering and mashing to the draining and slicing, they completely owned it!

Kids don't want to wait for you to cut up a whole melon, so let 'em get a head start with a massive end piece (serve in shallow bowl so it doesn't slide away) and a fun melon ball scooper or grapefruit spoon.

*Remember to always wash your watermelons well before slicing.

Working parents need healthier options for convenience, and all we can do is our best given what we have available here on the Shore and what we know about clean ingredients and limited added sugars-- the 2 main areas on which I focus my parent education classes. Take your time in stores like ALDI and the Grocery Outlet and look for affordable organic options whenever possible. Just make sure you check the expiration date on foods at the Outlet, and always read the back label even if it's stamped "organic."
