The journey into parenthood is powerful—but it can also be overwhelming in ways many people don’t expect.
The perinatal period (pregnancy through the first year postpartum) brings major hormonal, emotional, and life changes. While some mood shifts are normal, many parents experience more serious challenges. In fact, 1 in 7 women develop Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders (PMADs)—including depression, anxiety, OCD, and more—yet many go undiagnosed.
And it’s not just moms—1 in 10 dads experience depression during this time, often within the first 3–6 months after birth.
These struggles can affect anyone, regardless of background, and may be more likely with factors like hormone sensitivity, past trauma, sleep deprivation, or lack of support.
Feeling tired, emotional, or anxious can be part of the transition—but if you notice ongoing sadness, irritability, guilt, or trouble sleeping, it may be time to reach out.
