The Story Behind Flexi-Q eMU-C: Precision in Every Dose

When developing our reusable electromechanical Flexi-Q eMU-C for drugs in cartridges, our R&D team set out to create a device that delivers medicine accurately, reliably, and in a way that supports both pharma partners and patients.

From the start, the focus was on dose precision. The device can handle more than 12 fixed doses per cartridge, with increments as small as 0.01 ml — giving users full control over each injection. For added flexibility, doses can be set by the user or pre-programmed according to pharma requirements, including automatic loading from the FRID label on the cartridge.

The goal was to accommodate a wide range of treatments, with doses ranging from 0.1 ml up to the full cartridge content in a single injection. Thanks to ISO 11608 compliance, the device works with standard 1.5 ml or 3 ml cartridges and regular needles.

Every design choice reflects a single mission: to make drug delivery precise, reliable, and patient-friendly. Flexi-Q eMU-C helps therapies reach patients exactly as needed — safely, comfortably, and confidently.

As therapies become more advanced, the way treatments are delivered can make a real difference in the patient experience. A well-designed delivery device doesn’t just make administration easier — it reflects care across the entire treatment journey.
For complex therapies, especially biologics or large-volume doses, devices that are simple and comfortable to use can reduce errors, boost patient confidence, and support better adherence — all critical for achieving meaningful outcomes.
At Elcam E3D, we offer a variety of delivery solutions, from auto-injectors to wearable and on-body platforms, tailored to different drug types, containers, and patient needs. These devices are designed to make self-administration safe, intuitive, and reliable at home.

As therapies become more advanced, many treatments require larger doses or slow, controlled delivery, which can be difficult to administer with standard pens or autoinjectors. On-body injectors help address this challenge, allowing patients to self-administer safely and comfortably at home — particularly for biologics and other therapies that benefit from controlled or large-volume dosing.

The wearable injectors market reflects this shift, valued at USD 11.47 billion in 2025 and projected to reach USD 29.36 billion by 2034 https://eu1.hubs.ly/H0rCp_40? . Across the industry, there is a growing focus on patient-centric, home-based treatment approaches.
Intuitive steps, hands-free delivery, and clear feedback help reduce errors, simplify self-administration, and support patient confidence — all key factors for adherence and outcomes.

For pharma, wearable injectors offer a practical way to support complex therapies, enable patient-centered care, and align with the move toward home-based treatment — helping to improve both outcomes and the overall patient experience.

The OBI platform is designed with these principles in mind, providing a practical, patient-friendly solution that makes self-administration simpler, safer, and more reliable. Learn more at https://eu1.hubs.ly/H0rCq0V0

Today we came together for a Company Gathering with our parent company Elcam Medical 🧡💙
It was a great opportunity to connect, learn, align, and strengthen relationships across teams — and of course, to have some fun along the way.

Beyond the sessions and discussions, it was about sharing time, ideas, and energy, and simply enjoying being together as one extended team.

Looking forward to many more moments like this, where collaboration and connection continue to grow.

Can your device save a life in 27 seconds? ⏱️

Imagine this design challenge.
Your user is a soldier.
They’re wearing heavy rubber gloves, limiting dexterity.
They’re wearing a gas mask, limiting vision.
They’ve never seen your device before.

This wasn’t hypothetical. It was a real usability test for the Flexi-Q EAI emergency auto-injector.
We tested 10 participants with military or ex-military backgrounds in a simulated self-administration scenario. No training was provided. The only instructions available were on the device label. All participants operated under full gear — gloves and gas mask.

The results were clear.
90% succeeded on their very first attempt.
From pickup to completion, the average operation time was 27 seconds.
One participant didn’t succeed on the first try. He glanced at the figures but didn’t read the text, lifting the device too early and causing a wet injection.

What happened next mattered most.
Without guidance, training, or moderator input, he immediately understood the mistake and completed a successful injection on the second attempt.

That’s the power of designing for real life.
When you design for the extreme — stress, impaired vision, limited dexterity — you create a device that works for everyone. The difference between a use error and a safe recovery is good design.
Challenge us with your needs. Let’s talk.

Pharma teams know the injection sequence.
What’s less visible is where auto-injectors succeed — or fail: the transitions between steps.
At E3D, we identify hidden risks early to give you:
• Predictable performance under real-world conditions
• Stronger human factors validation
• Regulatory confidence
• Scalable lifecycle design

Because successful delivery isn’t just about the sequence — it’s about engineering confidence into every transition.

Auto-Injectors were not created for clinical settings, they work in living rooms, offices, and travel bags—real-life environments where patients need them most.

At E3D, we design with patients and partners in mind, creating a seamless path from insight to solution. Our learnings guide every decision:

• Ergonomic shapes for limited dexterity
• Sustainable solutions across mechanical & electromechanical, disposable & reusable devices
• Large, high-contrast displays
• Clear tactile and audio feedback
• Intuitive, error-preventing interfaces

Patient-centric design isn’t just a feature—it’s our foundation. 💡

We want to hear from you:
If you’ve ever used an auto-injector or helped someone do so, what’s one small change that would have made it easier? Your insight could inspire the next design improvement.

📈 A drug’s journey doesn’t end at approval.
In many cases, that’s where its real evolution begins.
In Life-Cycle Management (LCM), drug delivery devices play a bigger role than often assumed:
• Enabling new patient populations
• Supporting formulation changes (including higher viscosity)
• Improving ease of use and adherence
• Extending product relevance across indications and geographies
At E3D Drug Delivery Devices, we work with pharma teams to design flexible delivery platforms that support LCM strategies—without forcing a full redesign at every stage.
Whether it’s adapting an auto-injector for:
– emergency vs. chronic use
– evolving formulations
– changing regulatory or market needs
…the goal remains the same:
reliable delivery, patient safety, and long-term scalability.
Because extending a drug’s life cycle isn’t about adding complexity—
it’s about designing for what comes next. Let's talk [email protected]

18/05/2026

Imagine this:
Millions of patients around the world rely on auto-injectors to manage chronic conditions. Every week, every month, they trust these devices to deliver their therapies.
But there’s a hidden problem: most auto-injectors are completely disposable. They’re used once—and then thrown away. Each device adds plastic, metal, and sometimes electronics to hazardous waste, costing not only pharma companies and patients but also our environment.

Over a single year, more than 100 million disposable auto-injectors end up in waste streams — hundreds of tons of material that could have been avoided. https://eu1.hubs.ly/H0rrSgj0
Each single-use device also represents significant production costs, adding to the high cost of therapy for patients. The environment suffers too: millions of devices in regulated waste streams drive higher disposal costs, carbon footprint, and landfill load.

Yet reusable auto-injectors are still rare. Why? In conversations with the pharma world, we hear hesitation: regulatory concerns, device complexity, patient training, or simply the challenge of being first to innovate.
But the opportunity is clear: reduce waste, lower costs, and stand out in the market.
Flexi-Q mMU™ is designed to answer this challenge.
Our reusable mechanical auto-injector pairs a durable device with a single-use pre-filled syringe (PFS). With just one extra handling step, it delivers:

• Reliable, automated injections
• Fully integrated needle shielding and passive safety
• Consistent, easy-to-use operation

For pharma partners, the benefits are clear:
• Cut medical waste dramatically
• Lower treatment costs
• Improve patient confidence and adherence
• Deliver a sustainable, innovative solution that differentiates your products

Be the first to challenge the status quo. Together, we can create smarter, safer, and more sustainable auto-injection solutions — For patients, for pharma companies, and for the planet.
