Why You Can’t Stop Replaying What Went Wrong
Have you ever replayed something in your mind over and over - a conversation, a decision, a mistake and no matter how much time passes, you still find yourself thinking about it?
“What should I have done differently?” “Why did I do that?”
“Why can’t I let this go?”
Many women assume this means they are overthinking, emotionally weak, or unable to move on. But I don’t think that’s what’s actually happening. I think many times we replay things because something inside us still hasn’t been heard.
The Decisions We Make “From the Neck Up”
Years ago, I sold a Honda that I absolutely loved. Logically, the decision made sense. Financially, it looked like the right thing to do.
But emotionally, I wasn’t ready. I didn’t pause long enough to ask myself how I actually felt about the decision before making it.
For weeks, I mentally punished myself for making what felt like an impulsive decision. Looking back now, I don’t think I was replaying it because of the car itself. I think I was replaying it because I abandoned my emotional self in the decision-making process.
I listened to logic. But I didn’t listen to how I felt inside.
Why Emotional Awareness Matters
Many women become extremely skilled at making practical decisions. Responsible, efficient, logical decisions.
But over time, we can become disconnected from our emotional world and stop including ourselves fully in our own lives. And when that happens, a part of us often stays emotionally unresolved. That unresolved feeling is what keeps replaying.
A Different Experience
Years later, I had another painful decision to make. My fourteen-year-old cat became very ill. At the veterinary appointment, we discovered she had an ulcerated tumor in the roof of her mouth. Part of me wanted to end her suffering immediately. The veterinarian could have done that right then.
But thankfully, I had another option: I could bring her back the next day. That extra day changed everything. I held her. Talked to her. Cried with her. Loved her.
And the next day, with a broken heart, I let her go. The decision was still painful. But this time, I didn’t leave my emotional self behind. I gave my emotions time to catch up to reality.
Why We Replay Things
Often, replaying the past is not about weakness. It’s about emotional in-completion. Something inside us is still asking: “Will you listen to me this time?” Maybe grief was ignored. Maybe fear was ignored. Maybe regret was ignored. Maybe your deeper knowing was ignored. And that part of you keeps resurfacing because it still wants acknowledgment.
Questions That Change Everything
Instead of asking: “Why can’t I let this go?” Try asking: “What part of me wasn’t heard?” That question changes the relationship you have with yourself. Because now you’re no longer fighting your emotions. You’re listening to them. And often, that’s where healing begins.
