Fake Role Models on Social Media: Between Influence and Triviality
In an era where social media has become an integral part of people's lives, these platforms have transformed from tools for knowledge and communication into spaces where "trivial" stars shine and dominate the scene as influencers and role models, especially among young people.
The problem is no longer about value; rather, it's about followers and views, even if the content is of poor quality, and even deteriorating periodically. Some platforms have become prominent despite lacking knowledge, ethics, or a clear message, yet they attract attention with videos meant to be funny, protest-oriented, or out of touch with the times, climbing to "fame" on the backs of the naive and superficial.
What's more dangerous is that many of these individuals present themselves as role models in lifestyle, behavior, and even values, while their own lives are full of deviations and contradictions. This decline in role model standards shapes the consciousness of generations, fuels superficial thinking, and cultivates a love of fleeting trends, idleness, and blind imitation.
But the blame doesn't fall solely on these individuals; society also bears responsibility when it glorifies triviality and ignores true scholars, thinkers, and innovators. Families, educational institutions, religious leaders, and media figures also share the responsibility of presenting diverse and meaningful role models that inspire young people and cultivate in them specialization, critical thinking, and ambition.
Social media is not inherently evil, but it has become a tool for gaining the loudest voice, rather than a vehicle for profound values. We must either recalibrate our compass or allow generations to become lost in the illusion of fame and applaud those who don't deserve it.
