Melasma is a common skin condition characterized by brown or gray-brown patches, typically appearing on the face, particularly the cheeks, forehead, nose, and upper lip. It can also develop on other parts of the body exposed to the sun, such as the forearms and neck. Melasma is more prevalent in women, especially during pregnancy or when taking oral contraceptives or hormone replacement therapy.
The exact cause is unknown, but factors such as sun exposure, hormonal changes, and genetic predisposition play significant roles. Treatments include sun protection, topical lightening agents, retinoids, niacinamide and procedures like chemical peels or laser therapy.
