The economy is tough! 😮‍💨

But as a paediatrician and mother, here are some things I think we should invest in for the future of our children that I noticed following my recent trip to Dakar, Senegal with the Gates Foundation Global Creative Council!

Swipe to the end to see why this matters to South African healthcare! 👉🏽

Changemaker

At the Elaj Toure , I watched African scientists manufacturing vaccines on African soil. Right now, the continent produces less than 1% of the vaccines it needs. 🤯

Local manufacturing isn’t a nice-to-have — it’s protection for us, made by us. 💉

Before a Senegalese mother ever sees a doctor or nurse, she’s already spoken to her “Bajenu Gox” — a neighbourhood godmother. Sub-Saharan Africa carries roughly 70% of the world’s maternal deaths.

Trusted community health workers are often what closes that gap. 👩🏽‍⚕️

In Darou Khoudoss, I met women from Our Legacy Foundation running climate-smart farms and cooperatives — greenhouses, irrigation, market access, built by them.

Food security for a household starts with women having the land, tools and training to grow it themselves. 🌱

Over 2 billion people worldwide are deficient in essential vitamins and minerals, per the WHO. Malnutrition is also one of the top 5 leading causes of death in children under 5.

Watching the production of flour fortified by the centres supported by Helen Keller Intl reminded me: some of the most powerful child health interventions are ones that begin on a plate in a home. 🍲

In a Dakar classroom, I watched a child understand something for the first time — in HER home language, Wolof. Children taught in a language they understand are 30% more likely to read with comprehension by the end of primary school, per UNESCO.

That’s a health outcome too. 📖

None of these are separate issues. A child’s health is shaped by whether the vaccine reaching them was made with dignity, whether the woman who first noticed something was wrong was trusted, whether the food on their plate was fortified, and whether the lesson in front of them was ever actually legible to the

Here’s why I support World Breastfeeding Week as a mom AND doctor! 👩🏽‍⚕️👶🏽

As a paediatrician, I know the evidence. As a mom, I know how hard it is to live it out. What actually moves the needle isn’t guilt-tripping mothers — it’s strengthening what works: skilled counselling, baby-friendly hospital care, fair maternity leave, and real workplace support.

I’m honoured to partner with organisations like Footprints4Sam 1000 Days Of Grace Gates Foundation Gates Foundation Africa UNICEF South Africa and Ronald McDonald House Charities South Africa to help . From the Bajenu Gox “neighbourhood godmothers” in Dakar to the Kangaroo Mother Care unit at Rahima Moosa, to lactation centres like the one at Chris Hani Baragwanath — I’ve seen firsthand what a “warm chain of support” looks like when individuals, communities, health workers, and workplaces all show up.

I’ve got A LOT of content to get through over the next few days and weeks but I HAVE to start by thanking the team that put it all together - WRTHY and Gates Foundation Africa Gates Foundation

I wouldn’t ordinarily plan a trip to a Francophone country because the logistics would be so chaotic as I don’t speak French. But everything was planned, thought out and worked out for us. We could focus on being present and really getting to learn about the work being done by partners on the ground!
