A Rare Feline Eye Condition 🐱👁️

A beautiful 9-month-old kitten recently visited Johannesburg Animal Eye Hospital after the owner noticed that the iris (the coloured part of the eye) appeared to be "vibrating" and moving in both eyes.

A detailed examination using our slit-lamp biomicroscope revealed two possible rare developmental conditions:

🔹 A poorly developed lens, resulting in a lens that is smaller than normal with stretched ciliary processes (the dark bands visible behind the iris), or
🔹 A partial lens subluxation, where the lens is slightly loose and sits lower than normal within the eye.

These are uncommon congenital (developmental) conditions, and unfortunately there is currently no treatment available. The good news is that, at present, this young cat is comfortable and can continue to be monitored over time.

Cases like this are exceptionally rare. In fact, this is only the second case of its kind that we have seen at Johannesburg Animal Eye Hospital in the past 30 years.
