How long has it been since sleep made you feel properly rested?

You go to bed earlier. You have a quiet weekend. You might even cancel plans so you can rest.

Then Monday arrives and you’re still exhausted.

Sleep matters, but it can’t repair every kind of exhaustion.

Your mind may be tired from constantly thinking ahead. Your body may need gentle movement after hours of sitting or holding tension. Your senses may need less noise and input. Your emotions may need a break from carrying everyone else.

That’s why more sleep isn’t always the answer. The rest you choose needs to respond to what has actually been drained.

Before you blame yourself for still feeling tired, ask:

What kind of tired am I?

Be honest, when pressure rises, which of your needs is the first to disappear?

For me, it was often my body and my time. I would skip lunch, work through breaks and promise myself I would stop at a reasonable hour.

There was always one more thing to finish.

Self-abandonment can be as ordinary as repeatedly treating your own needs as the easiest ones to postpone.

Which tends to go first for you?

A. Your body
B. Your time
C. Your limits

Comment A, B or C. All three is also a perfectly valid answer.

How often do you say, ‘It’s easier if I just do it’, when the truth is that you don’t have the energy for the conversation that might follow?

Doing it yourself can feel easier in the moment. So can saying yes, keeping quiet or taking responsibility for how someone else might feel.

But easier doesn’t mean it costs you less.

Each time you ignore what you need to avoid discomfort, you teach yourself that your capacity matters less than keeping things smooth for everyone else.

Over time, that can look like resentment, exhaustion and feeling as though everyone needs something from you. The boundary problem started before anyone asked too much. It started when you stopped checking what their request would cost you.

You don’t have to become harsh or stop caring about people. You do need enough space to notice what you need before your automatic yes takes over.

During my second burnout, recovery became another thing I felt I was failing at.

I knew I should rest more.

Set better boundaries.

Take better care of myself.

Switch off from work.

None of this was bad advice.

But each suggestion felt like another instruction to follow when I barely had the capacity to get through the day.

I couldn’t work out where to begin because everything felt urgent. My mind was full, my body was exhausted and even small decisions felt like too much.

What I needed first was help reducing the noise.

Somewhere to look at what was draining me, what kind of exhaustion I was carrying and which of my needs had disappeared beneath work and responsibility.

This experience shaped the way I now approach burnout coaching.

We begin by helping you feel steady enough to think.

We look at where your energy is going and how the whole of you needs to be refuelled.

We identify the needs you have been postponing, dismissing or struggling to name.

Then we find a realistic place to begin, based on the capacity you have now.

The deeper work comes later.

When you begin pausing before reacting, recognising your patterns and seeing where you have repeatedly overridden yourself, we can explore what kept driving you beyond your limits.

Burnout coaching should help you put some of the weight down before asking you to understand why you carried it for so long.

You don’t need to know exactly what is wrong before you ask for help.

Most people reach out because daily life has become harder to carry.

They’re exhausted, irritable or struggling to think clearly. They know they can’t carry on like this, but they don’t yet know what needs to change.

That is enough to begin.

In a first burnout coaching session, we look at what is happening to you now.

What is creating the most pressure?

What is draining your energy?

What symptoms are affecting your daily life?

Then we choose one or two realistic steps that fit the capacity you have now.

You won’t leave with another long list of things to do. Burnout coaching should help you feel less overwhelmed and more able to see what needs attention first.

Crying in the car is rarely just about what happened that day.

It’s often what happens when you have been absorbing pressure, postponing your needs and holding yourself together for so long that one more thing becomes too much.

You might tell yourself you are overreacting.

That you just need a good night’s sleep.

That tomorrow you will pull yourself together and get on with it.

And often, that is exactly what you do.

You go back to work. You take care of what needs to be done. You keep functioning, while nobody sees how much it is costing you.

I know how difficult it can be to recognise burnout when you are still getting things done. I have been through it twice myself.

What I needed was somewhere to put down the noise long enough to understand what was draining me, why I kept overriding my needs and what needed to change first.

That is where support can help.

I’m Shayne, a burnout coach and  I help busy professionals who feel like they are quietly unravelling get unstuck and take back control.

Be honest.

What keeps getting postponed until life calms down?

A: My rest.
B: My health.
C: The conversation I need to have.

For many capable people, the problem is not that they don’t know what they need.

They know.

They can feel it in their patience, their body, their energy, their sleep, and how little capacity they have left for ordinary things.

But everything else keeps feeling more urgent.

So rest gets pushed to later.
The appointment gets pushed to later.
The honest conversation gets pushed to later.
The thing that would help gets pushed to later.

And later keeps moving.

Sometimes “after this week” feels reasonable.

Until it becomes the way you live.

Burnout often begins while you are still functioning, and sometimes one of the quietest warning signs is how often you keep postponing yourself.

Comment A, B or C.

No judgement. Just noticing.
