Caring for a child with a lower respiratory tract infection (LRTI) goes far beyond managing symptoms. It affects routines, emotions, finances, and decision-making in ways that are often overlooked in clinical care.

This qualitative South African study explored the lived experiences of parents managing children under three with LRTIs. The overarching theme was clear: “It is tough taking care of a sick child.” Parents reported disrupted sleep, feeding challenges, financial strain, and high levels of stress and anxiety.

While physiotherapy was largely viewed as beneficial, certain aspects like suctioning were described as distressing to witness. Importantly, parents expressed a strong need for better communication, clearer explanations, and more involvement in treatment decisions.

The study highlights a critical takeaway: family-centred care is not optional, it is essential.

Physiotherapists and healthcare teams must go beyond treatment and actively support, educate, and partner with caregivers to improve outcomes for both child and parent.

Men often feel pressure to “stay strong” but silence can be dangerous. It’s time to talk, check, and take action.

This Movember, the Pelvic & Women’s Health Physiotherapy Group (PWHPG) encourages all men to:
- Do regular self “nuts & bolts” checks.
- Get annual PSA blood tests after age 40 (earlier if you have a family history).
- Reach out for support, physiotherapy can help with incontinence, pelvic pain, recovery after cancer, and returning to exercise safely.

Let’s start conversations that save lives.
Because men’s health is more than physical, it’s mental, emotional, and vital.
