BCMM STATEMENT ON 30TH OF JUNE PROTESTS
29 June 2026
Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality (BCMM) acknowledges the anticipated nationwide demonstrations planned for the 30th of June 2026.
We would like to confirm that we are an active partner in the multi-stakeholder BCMM Safety and Security Cluster. While the South African Police Service (SAPS) is leading all joint operations and communications on this matter, the Municipality can confidently state that our law enforcement and emergency services are on high alert and prepared for any eventuality.
We expect a normal working day tomorrow. At this stage, no road closures are planned, and municipal services are projected to continue to operate as usual.
As the Municipality we want to make clear that we do not support or condone illegal immigration. We acknowledge that immigration challenges are a serious concern for our communities.
It is our view that the firm posture and decisive steps that have been taken by President Cyril Ramaphosa in his national public address does a lot in addressing the concerns of the South Africans concerned about illegal immigration.
While acknowledging the concerns of residents around illegal immigration, we strongly discourage any form of vigilantism or lawlessness. It is our view that taking the law into our hands undermines the intention of the intentions of the protests, which are to ensure law and order in so far as immigration. We are therefore pleading with residents and organised bodies participating in these protests to respect other people’s rights.
This includes the rights of non-protesting citizens, business owners, and workers who wish to go about their daily lives without fear of intimidation or disruption.
Buffalo City commits that its law enforcement teams, alongside SAPS and other stakeholders will remain highly visible to ensure peace, order, and the protection of both public and private property.
