Some books are published. Others feel like they have been waiting to be born.

After years of research, listening, remembering and retracing the wisdom carried by African women across generations, Dr Mmatshilo Ntswatswa Motsei’s long-awaited Ways of Being Born: Tracing the Footprints of Birth in Africa is finally here.

Ways of Being Born asks us to confront obstetric violence and imagine maternal healthcare differently with - dignity, humanity, ancestral knowledge, and African women’s lived experiences at its centre using both a biomedical and an indigenous lens.

This month of July 2026, I opened my healing space in Johannesburg by offering free sessions. I have met amazing people. The thing about giving is that you also receive. Every single person who spent time with me in this room contributed to my growth and healing. Interestingly, a few drove all the way from Pretoria.BoMkhaya. There’s a few more slots left until end of July. Book from the healing page of our website. You can also send a DM.

Ways of Being Born is not just about childbirth. It is about loss of a body of knowledge and a philosophical view of life expressed through ways in which we welcome a soul in the world. Birth is not a beginning of life, it is an extension and expansion of ancestral lineage. This is why many of us are named after those who came before us. In some instances, an elder may pass over as a new baby is born. The mystery of the wisdom we have lost about the sacredness of birth. Join us tomorrow Friday 17th as we delve into this conversation.
