Have you ever walked into a room and felt something before anyone said a word?
A change in the atmosphere. A tension you can't quite explain. Your breathing shifts. Your body responds.
In Episode Five of The Hidden Architecture of Perception, I explore what happens when nervous systems meet, and how we can be influenced by the people and environments around us without even realising it.
We can sense another person's state without consciously analysing it.
But there's an important distinction:
You can read the room without absorbing the room.
This episode explores co-regulation, perceptual sensitivity and the difference between noticing what is happening around you and unconsciously carrying it as your own.
I also offer three simple questions to try the next time you notice your state changing around someone:
What am I feeling?
When did it begin?
Whose state does this resemble?
Not everything you feel is yours to carry.
And perhaps the deeper question is not only what we pick up from a shared space...
but what we put into it.
