๐Ÿšจ Diseases We Thought Were History Are Coming Back

Diseases like measles and polio, once brought under control through vaccination, are making a comeback in some regions. Declining immunization rates, vaccine misinformation, and gaps in healthcare access are allowing these preventable infections to spread again. ๐Ÿฆ

Measles is among the most contagious diseases known. Global measles cases have increased sharply in recent years, with an estimated 10.3 million cases and 107,500 deaths worldwide in 2023. Outbreaks have returned in several countries, including areas that had previously eliminated sustained measles transmission.

Polio, which once paralyzed hundreds of thousands of children every year, has been reduced by more than 99% since 1988 through global vaccination efforts. However, wild poliovirus continues to circulate in a few regions, and vaccine-derived poliovirus outbreaks remain a concern where vaccination coverage is low.

Other vaccine-preventable diseases, including whooping cough (pertussis), diphtheria, and mumps, are also increasing in some communities. How did diseases that vaccines helped control for decades begin finding opportunities to return?

๐Ÿ’‰ Vaccines remain one of the greatest public health achievements in history, preventing millions of deaths every year. Keeping communities protected requires strong vaccination programs, reliable health information, and public trust.

๐ŸŒ Science has helped humanity defeat these diseases before. The question is: will we protect those achievements or allow preventable diseases to return?
