🧠 When every minute matters, rapid imaging can make a critical difference.

In suspected stroke, time is brain.

An urgent CT scan helps doctors distinguish between bleeding in the brain and a possible blocked blood vessel — a crucial first step in determining appropriate treatment.

At Prime Diagnostics’ flagship practice at Lenmed Shifa Private Hospital, we’re proud to support a multidisciplinary stroke programme recognised with the World Stroke Organisation (WSO) Angels Diamond Award.

Rapid Imaging. Rapid Answers.

Our clinical audits have demonstrated the ability to complete emergency CT brain imaging and provide a rapid radiology report within 10 minutes of hospital arrival.

Our experienced radiographers and specialist radiologists work closely with the hospital’s emergency team and neurologists to support timely diagnosis and treatment.

Our advanced imaging capabilities also include CT angiography, to assess for blocked cerebral arteries, and MRI brain, for further assessment when clinically indicated.

Know the signs of stroke. BE FAST:

B – Balance: Sudden loss of balance
E – Eyes: Sudden vision changes
F – Face: Facial drooping
A – Arms: Arm weakness
S – Speech: Difficulty speaking
T – Time: Seek emergency medical assistance immediately

Don’t wait for symptoms to resolve.

A cough that just won’t go away?

Most coughs following a cold improve within a few weeks. But when a cough persists, it’s important to understand why.

Common causes include post-viral irritation, asthma, acid reflux and postnasal drip. However, a persistent cough may also indicate an underlying infection, including tuberculosis (TB).

A cough lasting two weeks or longer should prompt medical assessment, particularly if accompanied by fever, night sweats, weight loss or coughing up blood.

Your healthcare provider may recommend a chest X-ray as part of the investigation, depending on your symptoms and clinical findings.

At Prime Diagnostics, we provide chest X-rays across our three Durban locations, supporting your healthcare team with timely diagnostic imaging.

Persistent cough? Don’t ignore it. Get checked.

Osteoporosis is often called silent because the first symptom is frequently a broken bone.

A bone mineral density (BMD) scan measures how strong your bones are, and it's one of the simplest ways to find thinning bone before a fracture does. Beyond the four signs above, other risk factors include a family history of hip fracture, low body weight, smoking, heavy drinking and conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis.

If any of these apply to you or a parent, ask your doctor whether a BMD scan makes sense. Bone density scanning is now available at our Lenmed Nu Shifa Hospital site.

CT uses X-rays, and the dose depends on the part of the body being scanned. Radiology works on a simple principle: use the lowest dose that still answers the clinical question. Our GE Revolution Maxima CT at Lenmed Shifa Hospital is built for low-dose scanning, and each protocol is adjusted to the patient and the question being asked.

What you can do:
• Tell us if you are, or could be, pregnant
• Mention any recent scans, so nothing is repeated unnecessarily
• Ask your doctor why the scan is needed. It's a fair question

What we'd discourage is refusing a scan your doctor considers necessary. Missing a diagnosis carries its own risk.

A small sweet thank-you for World Trauma Day 🍫

On the 14th this month (World Trauma Day), we left a few chocolates and other treats out for the colleagues who stopped by. It was a small thank you to the people who are there when someone comes in after an accident, a fall or worse.

Trauma care is a team effort. In the emergency department, on the wards and in theatre, it relies on quick decisions. Imaging often plays a part in those decisions, whether that’s a CT scan, an X-ray or a mobile X-ray at the bedside.

To everyone at Shifa who does this work, often on the hardest days of someone else’s life: thank you. We’re glad to work alongside you.

Lenmed Nu Shifa Hospital is now home to the first GE SIGNA Victor MRI scanner in Durban, at our flagship site.

It uses AIR Recon DL, a deep-learning technology that produces clearer images in less time. For you, that can mean a shorter scan and less time keeping still, which matters because any movement blurs the images.

If you’ve been referred for an MRI, swipe through to see what to expect.
