Excellence in nursing was proudly celebrated as Life Healthcare recognised its prestigious Great 100 Nurses for 2026.

This year, Constance (Connie) Bauer, Manager of the Renal Unit at Life Mount Edgecombe Hospital, was honoured among the selected recipients, a remarkable achievement that reflects her unwavering dedication, compassionate leadership, and commitment to exceptional patient care.

Adding to the significance of the occasion, Patricia Naidoo, a 2025 Great 100 Nurses recipient and Second in Charge of Life Mount Edgecombe Hospital NICU, delivered an inspiring and engaging address to the 2026 honourees. Patricia shared her personal journey of what it meant to be recognised and how the experience profoundly influenced the way she practices nursing, leads with purpose, and continues to impact the lives of patients and colleagues alike.

The ceremony served as a powerful reminder of the passion, resilience, and excellence that nurses bring to healthcare every day — celebrating those who continue to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others.

Healthy habits established in adolescence, such as staying physically active and eating a healthy diet can put you on the path to good heart health.

Studies have shown hardening of the arteries due to plaque build-up, can start developing as early as adolescence. Hardened arteries block blood flow and can lead to heart attacks or strokes.

At Life Mount Edgecombe Hospital we are here to help you navigate the challenges and support your journey to ensure your heart remains healthy.

“You have to understand your ‘why’, because that is what carries you through the moments that test you.” says Nursing Standards Manager Zwannda Netshankhu.

As we continue to honour our nurses beyond International Nurses Day, three Life Healthcare nurses demonstrate how discipline and continuous learning within their multidisciplinary teams have been the power behind the care they provide to their patients.

What comes to mind when you think of nurses?

Is it their support? Their steadfast compassion? Their ability to translate complex medical information into something patients and families can better understand?

In reality, their role goes far beyond this. Nurses sit at the centre of care – coordinating multidisciplinary teams, sharing critical insights and advocating for patients at every step of their journey. The real power behind care lives in the unseen: the decisions made in critical moments, the quiet advocacy and the human connection that shapes every patient experience.

This International Nurses Day, we spoke to four nurses about their personal journeys, the experiences that have shaped them and the moments that continue to define how they care: https://www.lifehealthcare.co.za/news-and-info-hub/latest-news/four-nurses-on-the-power-behind-care-and-clinical-expertise/?utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=link&utm_campaign=nursesday_article1_may26

Nursing is more than a profession – it’s a human connection.

This International Nurses Day, Life Healthcare is proudly supporting The Reach For A Dream Foundation’s Slipper Day by purchasing 15 000 stickers for our nurses nationwide. A simple gesture that represents compassion, hope and care beyond treatment.

For many children living with serious illness, nurses are the familiar faces who help them feel safe, seen and supported. By stepping into Slipper Day, we’re recognising the compassion our nurses show every day – while helping Reach For A Dream create moments of joy and possibility for young patients and their families.

Because the Power Behind Care is always human.
Because Making life better starts with care.

12/05/2026

Today, we honour nurses.

Before the world fully wakes, they are already there, caring for patients, supporting families and bringing calm, confidence and humanity to moments of care that matter most.

Through their skill, compassion and sound clinical judgement, nurses give a voice to patients, collaborate in teams and uphold quality care every day. In everything they do, they help make life better.

Thank you to our nurses who are the true power behind care.

Myth: Cardiovascular disease affects older people.
Fact: Cardiovascular disease can affect anyone at any age. In addition to ageing, things that increase your risk of heart disease include:

*Over eating or eating unhealthy foods
*Not being physically active
*A family history of heart disease
*Having a heart condition at birth

Speak with your cardiologist about your heart health.
Each beat counts, stay healthy and informed. We are here to support you.
