Most people see a laboratory result as a number on a screen or a report in a chart. What they don’t see is everything it took to make that number reliable.

Behind every result are hours of testing, troubleshooting instruments, reviewing controls, checking specimens, investigating unexpected findings, and making sure the answer is accurate before it reaches the care team.

In the laboratory, there is no room for “close enough.” A result can influence a diagnosis, change a treatment plan, determine whether blood is safe to transfuse, or help identify an infection. That responsibility follows us through busy days, understaffed shifts, long nights, and moments when the workload feels impossible.

We may not be standing at the bedside, but our work is still part of the patient’s care. The CBC we verify, the culture we identify, the chemistry result we release, and the blood we crossmatch can all become critical pieces of a much bigger clinical picture.

Sometimes the laboratory feels invisible. We don't always receive the recognition that other areas of healthcare do. But every accurate result represents something important: someone took the time to make sure the science was right.

We don't guess.
We don't cut corners.
We don't simply push out numbers.

We test. We verify. We interpret. We confirm.

Because behind every laboratory result is a patient—and getting it right matters.

Statement of Condolence on the Passing of Professor Tandi Matsha-Erasmus

The Society of Medical Laboratory Technology of South Africa (SMLTSA) extends its heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, colleagues, and the broader scientific community on the passing of Professor Tandi Matsha-Erasmus.

Professor Matsha-Erasmus was an esteemed academic, researcher, and mentor whose contributions to higher education and cardiometabolic health research have had a lasting impact. As a valued member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Medical Laboratory Science and Technology South Africa (JMLSTSA), she played an important role in advancing scientific scholarship and was a dedicated supporter of SMLTSA and its initiatives.

Her commitment to research excellence, education, and the development of future scientists will be remembered with great respect and admiration.

On behalf of the SMLTSA Executive Committee and members, we extend our sincere sympathies to her loved ones and all those whose lives she touched. May they find comfort in the remarkable legacy she leaves behind.

Rest in peace, Professor Tandi Matsha-Erasmus.
