The Moon's Path Between Two Lands
Chapter 1: Whispers at Tshelimnyama
The twilight at Tshelimnyama always felt like a veil lifting, revealing secrets the day obscured. That first night, seeing her by the baobab… it was like a dream. Samkelisiwe. Her voice, the way the moonlight clung to her… I told Philane about it later, careful to sound merely curious. But it was more than curiosity. It was a pull, a deep resonance I couldn't explain.
"Did you see her clearly, Owenkosi?" Philane had asked, his gaze a little too intense. "By the old baobab, you said?" There was a subtle urgency in his tone that I hadn't noticed before. My own encounter by the well… her sadness mirrored a loneliness I rarely acknowledged. When Owenkosi described her, I nodded, adding details of my own, subtly emphasizing the connection I felt. Was he noticing? Was he feeling the same strange pull?
Each night, returning to Tshelimnyama became a silent pilgrimage. Seeing her again, hearing her stories… it was like stepping into another world. I offered her water once, a simple gesture of courtesy. The way it seemed to pass through her hand… a chill went through me that had nothing to do with the night air. "She didn't drink it," I mentioned to Philane later, a frown creasing my brow. "Said she had no need."
"Perhaps she is not thirsty in the way we are," Philane replied quickly, a strange defensiveness in his voice. I remembered the dried fruit I’d offered, untouched. She’d smiled a sad, knowing smile. We discussed it, tossing around explanations – perhaps she was fasting, perhaps she was simply not hungry. But a deeper unease stirred within me. Her otherworldliness was becoming undeniable.
Back in Doesnhoek, I found myself constantly thinking of her. Her stories of Tshelimnyama, the way her eyes seemed to hold ancient knowledge… "She knows so much," I remarked to Philane one evening. "About the old ways, the spirits of the land…"
