April is Limb Loss and Limb Difference Awareness Month!

This month, we shine a light on the strength, resilience, and extraordinary lives of people living with limb loss or limb difference.

Whether through trauma, medical conditions, or from birth, every story is unique—and every person deserves support, access to quality care, and to be seen for who they truly are.

This year, the Amputee Coalition is celebrating 40 years of advocacy and community! It’s a powerful reminder of how far we’ve come and how much more we can achieve together.

🧡 Wear orange to show your support (especially on )!

Let’s celebrate the courage, creativity, and everyday wins of this incredible community. Your ordinary is extraordinary. 💪

🦋Lymphedema Awareness Month – Day # 21🦋

Primary Lymphedema: More Than One Starting Point

Earlier this month we talked about primary lymphedema, but we did not break down the different ways it can appear.🩵

Primary lymphedema is different from secondary lymphedema because it is genetic. It happens when the lymphatic system does not develop properly. The lymph vessels may be missing, underdeveloped, or not functioning the way they should.

Because of this, primary lymphedema can appear at different stages of life.

Primary lymphedema may develop as:

• Congenital Lymphedema – Present at birth or develops within the first two years of life.🦋

• Lymphedema Praecox – Usually develops around puberty or during the teenage years. This is the most common form of primary lymphedema. 🦋

• Lymphedema Tarda – Appears later in life, typically after the age of 35. 🦋

• Genetic Syndromes – Some rare genetic conditions can also cause primary lymphedema, including: 🦋

Milroy disease – A rare inherited condition where babies are born with lymphedema, usually affecting the legs. It happens because the lymphatic vessels did not develop properly before birth.🩵

Park-Weber syndrome – A rare condition involving abnormal blood vessels and lymphatic vessels. It can cause swelling, skin changes, and sometimes one limb growing larger than the other. 🩵

In many cases, it is something they are born with or develop later because of genetic changes in the lymphatic system.

Awareness helps people recognize symptoms earlier and better understand the many ways lymphedema can begin🩵🦋

Lymphedema Awareness Month – Day #12

💧 Shopping for Clothes and Shoes Isn’t Simple with Lymphedema—its a nightmare 👕 👖 👟

For many people living with lymphedema, a simple shopping trip can feel impossible:🛍️

• Jeans are often out — legs may be much larger than the waist and upper body, leaving pants baggy at the top but painfully tight over lobes. Most of the time they dont go past lower legs. 👖
• Shirts or tops may fit the lower tummy area (depending on location of LE), but tighten painfully around swollen arms or shoulders if upper body is affected. 👔
• Shoes are a nightmare — one foot is often larger than the other, and many stores won’t accommodate the differences. Most shoes end up being flip-flops or oversized slip-ons that slide off when swelling is “better”, and are uncomfortable when swelling flares. 👠
• Sizes change from day to day, because swelling shifts constantly. 📏

Some people get so frustrated during shopping trips that they leave the store holding back tears, feeling defeated by something that seems so simple to others. 😩

What seems like a normal shopping trip for most — trying on clothes or picking shoes — can become hours of trial, compromise, and emotional strain for someone with lymphedema. 🛒

🩵🦋 Awareness means understanding that lymphedema affects everyday life in ways most people never see, from the fitting room to walking out the door. 🩵🦋
