Celebrating World Breastfeeding Week at Steve Biko Academic Hospital
Steve Biko Academic Hospital (SBAH) joined the global observance of World Breastfeeding Week, 1–7 August 2026, with a successful Breastfeeding Awareness Event held under the theme: “Breastfeeding for a sustainable start in life: Strengthen what works".

The event brought together healthcare professionals teams to reaffirm SBAH’s commitment to supporting mothers.

A key focus of the program was encouraging healthcare teams to strengthen breastfeeding support systems, recognise practices that are already working well across the hospital, and ensure that mothers receive consistent, evidence-based guidance throughout their healthcare journey.

Furthermore, breastfeeding competition results are as follows:

1st Place – Ward 3.1: Defending champions, retaining their title through their exceptional commitment to supporting mothers from pregnancy to birth and beyond.

2nd Place – Ward 8.8 B/C: Recognised for their excellent standards of care and implementation of hospital breastfeeding guidelines.

3rd Place – Ward 8.9: Commended for their dedicated efforts and supportive clinical environment.

Congrats to all the winners 🏆.

Steve Biko Academic Hospital (SBAH) has been recognised for achieving the most improved Audit of Predetermined Objectives (AoPO) performance in the Gauteng Department of Health.

The AoPO is an important performance audit conducted by the Auditor-General of South Africa (AGSA) to assess whether government departments and public entities are achieving the objectives they have set. It examines areas such as service delivery, target measurement and the achievement of strategic results.

Reflecting on this achievement, SBAH Chief Executive Officer, Dr Lehlohonolo Majake-Mogoba, said the improvement was the result of a three-year journey involving Patient Administrators, Clinicians and Health Informatics.

“This has been a three-year project that spans Patient Administration, Clinical Services and Health Informatics. By identifying gaps in the validity, accuracy and reliability of data, a Facility Audit Readiness Task Team was established. Senior staff were responsible for analysing the gaps and cascading the required improvements to teams across the hospital.

“This is a huge systems-improvement milestone that demonstrates what collective commitment can achieve.”

Dr Majake-Mogoba emphasised that the focus now shifts to sustaining this improved performance and building on the progress achieved.

This recognition is another cap in excellence for Steve Biko Academic Hospital and a testament to the dedication, teamwork and commitment of staff across the institution

Steve Biko Academic Hospital Receives Prestigious World Stroke Organisation Award

The Gauteng Department of Health is proud to announce that Steve Biko Academic Hospital (SBAH) has been recognised by the World Stroke Organisation as the first state facility in South Africa to achieve Angels Accreditation, while consecutively maintaining Diamond Status for the past three years. This now makes Steve Biko Academic an Essential Stroke Centre.

This accolade reflects the outstanding work of the Neurology Department under the leadership of Prof Mandisa Kakaza , whose dedication has ensured the growth of world‑class stroke management at SBAH.

Dr Louis Kroon, a fellow in Stroke Management states that
“This affirmation by the Angels Foundation has propelled us to assist private institutions in achieving similar status, which speaks volumes about the pioneering healthcare offered by the state. We are also expanding this advanced telehealth management into the rest of our cluster,”

The Chief Executive Officer of SBAH added: " This is certainly no small feat, but a testament to the excellence in healthcare rendered by our highly specialised and super‑specialised facility within Gauteng Province.”
