2KM β€” OPPORTUNITY

Every journey toward meaningful change begins with the belief that something better is possible.

This milestone reflects on the opportunities created when people unite around a common purpose.

Waiting changes more than health.

It changes routines.
It changes families.
It changes opportunities.

Behind every surgical waiting list is a person trying to keep moving forward while waiting for the care they need.

What does vulnerability mean?

For South Africa, it meant stepping into an uncertain future.

For many patients on surgical waiting lists, it means living with uncertainty while waiting for care.

The first milestone of the ASH Long Walk to Healthcare Freedom invites us to pause and reflect on the courage required to keep moving forward when the path ahead is not yet clear.

On 18 July 2026, participants will journey through 6.7 kilometres of storytelling, reflection and hope.

This is the first step.

Waiting changes more than health.

For many South Africans, waiting for surgery means more than living with a medical condition.

It can mean:

β€’ Lost income

β€’ Family strain

β€’ Anxiety and uncertainty

β€’ Reduced independence

β€’ Missed opportunities

Every waiting list number represents a real person and a real story.

Who do you know on the surgical waiting list?

For many South Africans, waiting for surgery means months or even years of uncertainty.

Behind every waiting list number is a person whose quality of life has been affected while they wait.

A parent.

A friend.

A colleague.

A neighbour.

Perhaps even yourself.

Do you know someone who has experienced this?

MOVEMENT PARTNER SPOTLIGHT

African Synergy Health proudly acknowledges the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Health for its collaboration and support in advancing access to surgical healthcare.

The challenge of surgical waiting lists cannot be solved by one organisation alone. It requires hospitals, healthcare professionals, government departments, sponsors, and communities working together.

The ASH movement exists to bring those partners together.

Thank you to the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Health for helping move this vision forward.
