There are moments when what is happening around us becomes difficult to carry emotionally.
To the women feeling afraid, angry, heartbroken or simply exhausted by the continued violence against women in our country: I see you.
You should not have to become accustomed to stories of women being harmed. You should not have to normalise constantly thinking about your safety. And you do not have to dismiss the emotional impact this can have on you simply because you were not directly affected.
Fear, grief, anger and even feeling overwhelmed by the news are deeply human responses.
As a psychiatrist, but also as a woman, I want to remind you to be gentle with your mind in this moment. Speak to someone. Step away from distressing coverage when you need to. Allow yourself to feel what you feel.
And to the women whose lives have been taken: you were more than the circumstances in which we came to know your names. Your lives mattered.
My thoughts are with their families, loved ones and every woman carrying this particularly heavily today.
