Some people have a way of remaining present in our lives long after they are gone.
A few days ago, we shared stories and laughed together, I was reminded of the late Sr Matolengwe, who mentored me during my formative years in the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit at Nelson Mandela Academic Hospital.

She had a wonderful sense of humour, but when it came to patient care, there was no room for compromise. She was meticulous, unwavering, and believed that everything should be done precisely and by the book. Looking back, I can't help but smile because I realise just how much of her has stayed with me.

If you've ever wondered why I'm so particular, so thorough, and why I insist on doing things properly every single time, you now know who to thank. Her legacy lives on not only in my memories, but in the way I practise medicine every day. Thank you, Sr Matolengwe, for your wisdom, your laughter, and for setting a standard that continues to guide me.

Honoured and deeply grateful to have been entrusted by the Department of Health to develop and present an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) Referral Pathway.

This initiative is about far more than a document—it is about creating a clearer, more coordinated pathway that helps children and their families access the right care, at the right time, through the right professionals.

By strengthening referral systems, we are laying the foundation for earlier identification, timely intervention, improved collaboration across healthcare services, and better outcomes for every child living with ASD.
