A skilled reader can recognise a familiar word in less than half a second.

Think about that for a moment...

Your brain doesn't stop to sound out every letter of common words like the, house or school. Instead, it instantly recognises familiar word patterns stored in long-term memory.

This process is called automatic word recognition, and it's one of the biggest differences between struggling readers and fluent readers.

When recognising words becomes automatic:
✨ Reading feels easier.
✨ Reading becomes faster and more fluent.
✨ The brain has more capacity to focus on understanding the text instead of figuring out individual words.

That's why fluent readers aren't simply "reading faster"—their brains are working more efficiently.
