Do we see the child who is actually there—or the child we hope they will become?
Natia, who lives in Georgia, and I are beginning a new video and blog series:
Conscious Parenting: Five Jungian Principles for Raising the Whole Child
Our first principle is simple, but challenging:
The child is an individual—not an extension of the parent.
Every child has a unique temperament, personality and way of meeting the world. A quiet child does not necessarily need to become more outgoing. A sensitive child does not need to be shamed into becoming “tougher.” A strong-willed child may be developing determination and an independent voice.
Seeing the child clearly does not mean allowing every behaviour. Children still need loving guidance and firm boundaries. It means correcting behaviour without rejecting the child’s nature.
In this first article, I explore how parents can look beneath behaviour, pause before reacting and become curious about the child developing before them.

A question to carry with you:
When do I see my child most clearly—and when do my own hopes, fears or expectations take over?
