💜 Small babies, big potential. 💜

At Newborn Support Zambia, we are incredibly excited about the theme for World Prematurity Day 2026:

“Small babies, big potential. Invest in follow-up care to protect their future.”

This theme speaks to an important truth: our responsibility does not end when a premature baby leaves the NICU. Survival is only the beginning.

As healthcare workers, we must look beyond delivery and discharge. Babies born too soon need intentional, structured and compassionate follow-up to monitor their growth, development, nutrition, vision, hearing, neurological progress and overall wellbeing while supporting their families along the way.

Over the coming weeks, Newborn Support Zambia will be sharing content highlighting the importance of follow-up care for babies born preterm, and exploring what we, as healthcare professionals, can do to ensure that these tiny babies are not simply discharged, but followed, supported and given every opportunity to thrive.

Because every small baby has big potential. 🌍💜

Let’s move from survival to thriving.

Every second counts when caring for a sick newborn.

Join Newborn Support Zambia this Wednesday at 19:00 CAT for an engaging session on Emergency Triage Assessment & Treatment (ETAT) for Neonates.

Our presenter, Mr. Benkele (Paediatric Nurse & Trainer), will take us through the fundamentals of rapid assessment, prioritization, and life-saving interventions for neonatal emergencies.

We’ve made progress—but we’re hitting a wall.

Perinatal mortality in Zambia is declining, yes… but not fast enough.

Because the problem has changed.

It’s no longer just about reaching a facility.
It’s about what happens inside the facility.

Babies are still dying from preventable causes:
• Intrapartum stillbirths
• Birth asphyxia
• Prematurity
• Sepsis

And behind many of these?
Delays. Systems gaps. Missed moments.

The “third delay” is now the biggest barrier.

If we want to accelerate progress, we must shift focus:
👉 From access → quality
👉 From attendance → effective care
👉 From presence → preparedness

Because being in a facility should mean being safe.

Fun fact: Babies in the NICU sometimes get caffeine.
Not a latte😅, but caffeine citrate to help them remember to breathe. (Because their brains are premature, they actually forget to breathe☠️)
It’s basically a gentle “hey… breathe please” nudge for tiny lungs.

Now imagine what happens when there’s no caffeine citrate available for these babies.

Let’s advocate to have this important drug in our NICUs.

Did you know that most people only know about blood donation?

Some know about organ donation.

But fewer people know about something that saves the lives of premature babies every day:

Breast milk donation.

Breast milk donation happens when a lactating mother donates her extra breast milk to a human milk bank.

The milk is carefully:
• screened
• pasteurized
• stored safely

Hospitals then give this milk to babies who urgently need it.

These include:
• Premature babies
• Sick newborns in NICU
• Babies whose mothers cannot produce enough milk

Donor milk is considered the next best option after a mother’s own milk.

For the next few days, we will be demystifying this concept and sharing everything you need to know!
