🟣 Leg swelling
➟ Leg swelling happens when extra fluid collects in the tissues of the legs, ankles, or feet.
→ It may be mild and temporary after long sitting or standing.
→ It can also be a sign of vein problems, blood clots, pregnancy-related swelling, medicine side effects, or heart, kidney, liver, or lymph problems.
🟣 Common causes
➟ Long standing or sitting
→ Fluid can pool in the legs after standing or sitting for long hours.
➟ Varicose veins
→ Weak leg veins can cause heaviness, swelling, aching, and visible veins.
➟ Pregnancy
→ Mild ankle swelling can happen, but sudden or severe swelling needs review.
➟ Medicine side effect
→ Some blood pressure medicines, pain medicines, hormone medicines, diabetes medicines, or steroids can cause swelling.
➟ Heart, kidney, or liver disease
→ These conditions can cause fluid buildup, often affecting both legs.
➟ Lymph swelling
→ Blocked lymph drainage can cause long-lasting, firm swelling.
➟ Blood clot warning
→ Sudden one-sided swelling with pain, redness, or warmth may suggest deep vein thrombosis and needs urgent care.
🟣 Management
➟ Elevate the legs.
→ Raise the legs while resting to reduce fluid pooling.
➟ Move regularly.
→ Walking and ankle movements help improve circulation.
➟ Reduce salt if advised.
→ Less salt may help reduce fluid retention in some people.
➟ Use compression only if advised.
→ Compression stockings may help vein-related swelling, but medical advice is important first.
➟ Review medicines and causes.
→ A doctor can check for medicine side effects, vein disease, heart disease, kidney disease, liver disease, or lymph problems.
➟ Seek urgent care for red flags.
→ One-leg swelling, chest pain, breathlessness, severe pain, redness, or warmth needs urgent medical care.
🟣 When to seek medical help
➟ See a doctor if swelling is new, persistent, worsening, painful, one-sided, or associated with skin changes, wounds, fever, or reduced urination.
→ Get emergency care if leg swelling occurs with chest pain, shortness of breath, fainting, or sudden severe one-sided leg pain.
