For more than a decade, a mother of three lived with persistent urinary incontinence following a serious road accident, without knowing the underlying cause.

At SSMC, Dr. Amin El Helw, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, recognised the complexity of her condition: a complication of her previous pelvic injury causing an extra bone growth blocking and interfering with her urinary system.

The patient was surgically treated through a unique combination of orthopaedic and urogynaecological surgery.

Dr. El Helw collaborated on the case with Dr. Manal ElRedy, Consultant, Obstetrics and Gynaecology and Urogynaecology, initially on a surgical procedure to remove the bone block, clearing the way for further needed surgeries.

Through specialist assessment and a complex surgical procedure, multiple vesicovaginal fistulas that had previously gone undiagnosed were identified, allowing the patient to receive the treatment she needed and move forward after years of uncertainty.
