I “had to” talk about this.

Taking care of your looks does not mean you’re only concerned about societal perception, or that you’re doing it to get male attention. It also doesn’t mean you’re insignificant as a person, nor does it take away from your power.

Of course, none of our choices exist in a vacuum. Beauty standards exist. Patriarchy exists. The male gaze exists. We all grow up absorbing ideas about what is beautiful, feminine and desirable.

But acknowledging that influence doesn’t mean denying women their agency.

A woman can understand exactly how society sees her and still choose makeup. Botox. A facelift. A sexy dress. Or none of them. She can enjoy femininity, benefit from beauty, even knowingly play with the male gaze — without being defined or controlled by it.

Femininity and power are not mutually exclusive.
That’s the conversation I want to have.

PS: I chose this track on purpose. Hania Aamir 哈尼亚·阿米尔 defines power and femininity very clearly and I love that about her!
