Did you know that June is Dysphagia Awareness Month? 🗓️💙

Dysphagia is the medical term for difficulty swallowing, affecting a person's ability to safely move food, liquid, or saliva from the mouth to the stomach. It can impact individuals of all ages—from infants struggling with feeding milestones to adults recovering from neurological events—making specialized assessment and intervention absolutely vital.

Swallowing is something most of us do thousands of times a day without a second thought. But when swallowing becomes difficult or dangerous, it directly impacts physical health, breathing safety, nutrition, and psychological well-being.

This Dysphagia Awareness Month, raising awareness helps ensure that children and adults facing feeding and swallowing challenges receive the early, expert speech therapy intervention they need to eat safely and thrive.

At Bridges, our specialized speech therapy and feeding programs focus on rebuilding safe swallowing foundations to unlock lasting health and daily independence.

Did you know the tongue and oral muscles can influence sleep quality?

Let’s talk about Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy (OMT) for Sleep Apnea and sleep-related breathing difficulties.

Myofunctional Therapy focuses on strengthening the muscles of the tongue, lips, cheeks, and throat to support better breathing patterns and airway stability during sleep.

When these muscles are weak or poorly coordinated, the airway may collapse more easily during sleep, contributing to snoring, mouth breathing, or sleep-disordered breathing.

👅 Tongue Tracing
Moving the tongue across different areas inside the mouth
➡️ Improves tongue strength, mobility, and lateral control
➡️ Supports better oral awareness and tongue coordination

🔊 Tongue Clicks
Creating suction-based tongue clicks against the palate
➡️ Helps improve tongue elevation and tongue base control
➡️ Encourages proper tongue-palate contact

🌬️ Cheek Puffs
Holding and controlling air inside the cheeks
➡️ Strengthens cheek and facial muscles
➡️ Supports oral muscle tone and breathing control

🔝 Tongue Hold Exercise
Training the tongue to rest on the palate
➡️ Encourages proper tongue resting posture
➡️ Helps support airway stability during breathing and sleep

✨ Through Myofunctional Therapy, we’re supporting:

Better oral muscle strength and coordination
Improved tongue posture and airway support
Nasal breathing patterns
Reduced mouth breathing habits
Better sleep-related breathing quality

Why does this matter?
The muscles of the mouth and throat play an important role in keeping the airway open during sleep. Strengthening these muscles may help improve breathing efficiency, oral resting posture, and sleep quality when guided appropriately by trained professionals.

Early signs of autism can sometimes be subtle and easy to miss.
Recognizing these behaviors early can support timely intervention and better outcomes.

In this video, we’re highlighting a few commonly observed behaviors that may be seen in children on the autism spectrum. These are not always obvious—but they can give us important clues about how a child is processing their environment.

You might notice a child lining up toys repeatedly, seeking visual input (like watching spinning objects), flapping their hands when excited, or walking on their toes. These behaviors are often linked to sensory processing, regulation, and communication differences.

Every child develops at their own pace—but when certain patterns repeat consistently, it’s important to look a little deeper. Early support can make a significant difference in how a child learns, communicates, and connects with others.

At Bridges, we focus on guiding families with clarity and care—helping you understand your child without fear or judgment.

⚠️ Disclaimer: This video is purely for awareness. Please do not judge or label any child based on these signs alone. If you have concerns, it’s always best to consult a qualified professional.

“Say ‘Buh’…” — but the lips still won’t close properly? 🗣️
Sometimes the challenge is not understanding the sound… it’s coordinating the movement needed to produce it.

In Speech Therapy, we don’t just ask children to repeat sounds again and again.
We help the brain feel where the movement should happen.

For bilabial sounds like /b/, /p/, and /m/, the lips must come together with enough awareness, timing, and coordination to create clear speech.

✨ In this activity, we use tactile prompting techniques to guide lip movements during speech production.

👄 Lip Tracing
Using an oral swab to gently trace the upper and lower lips
➡️ Increases awareness of where the lips should close
➡️ Helps the child “feel” the movement pattern

📍 Tactile Cueing
Providing a stable sensory cue near the lips and mouth
➡️ Supports motor planning for speech production
➡️ Helps organize lip movement for clearer sound output

🗣️ Sound Production Practice
The child practices producing “Bu,” “Pa,” or “Ma” with guided tactile feedback
➡️ Encourages better lip closure
➡️ Improves clarity and consistency of speech sounds

✨ Through this activity, we’re supporting:

Bilabial speech sound production
Lip closure and coordination
Oral sensory awareness
Motor planning for speech
Clearer articulation and speech intelligibility

Why does this matter?
Some children know exactly what they want to say—but their brain and oral muscles are still learning how to coordinate the movement. Tactile cues give the brain a clearer “map” for speech production.

We aren’t just teaching a sound.
We’re helping the brain build stronger motor patterns for clearer, more confident communication. 🧠✨

Reaching, hanging, and weight-bearing activities are powerful Occupational Therapy tools for developing foundational motor and sensory skills. Through structured monkey bar activities, children challenge their strength, coordination, and body awareness while engaging in purposeful movement.

🧠 Proprioceptive Processing

Supporting body weight through the arms and hands provides deep pressure input to the muscles and joints.
➡️ Improves body awareness and movement control
➡️ Helps children better understand where their body is in space
➡️ Supports sensory regulation and attention

🎯 Motor Planning

The child must plan when to reach, grasp, and shift body weight from one position to another.
➡️ Develops movement sequencing
➡️ Improves problem-solving during motor tasks
➡️ Enhances coordination for functional activities

🏋️ Postural Control & Stability

Maintaining balance while reaching overhead requires continuous activation of the core and shoulder muscles.
➡️ Improves trunk stability
➡️ Supports upright posture
➡️ Creates a strong foundation for fine motor skills

🤝 Bilateral Coordination

Both sides of the body work together to reach, hold, stabilize, and maintain balance.
➡️ Encourages coordinated use of both hands
➡️ Supports dressing, writing, and playground skills
➡️ Improves overall motor efficiency

✋ Grip Strength & Task Tolerance

Holding onto the rings requires sustained hand strength and endurance.
➡️ Strengthens hand and finger muscles
➡️ Improves grasping skills needed for daily activities
➡️ Increases task persistence and activity tolerance

Why does this matter?

Strong postural control, bilateral coordination, motor planning, and grip strength are essential for everyday activities such as dressing, handwriting, playground participation, and classroom tasks. Through purposeful Occupational Therapy activities like monkey bar reaching, children develop the physical and sensory foundations needed for greater independence and confidence.
