Nothing says October like a packed month of events around mental health đź’™

As we mark World Mental Health Day, our team is stepping beyond the clinic to encourage important conversations around mental health!

🎓 At the American University in Dubai (AUD), Dr. Elham Al Ghassemi, Psychiatrist, and Timea Antal, Psychologist, are engaging with the university community through a presentation dedicated to mental health and well-being.

🎓 At the Higher Colleges of Technology (HCT), Dr. Joseph El-Khoury, Psychiatrist, is taking part in World Mental Health Day activities, raising awareness and encouraging open conversations about mental health.

And this is only the beginning.. October has so much more in store for The Valens Clinic team, with more events, more conversations, and more opportunities to make a difference.

This year’s theme, “Dyslexia in real life: At work,” is an important reminder that dyslexia doesn’t end when school does.

Children don’t stop having dyslexia. They grow with it.

They grow strengths around it. They develop strategies, learn what works for them, and become better able to advocate for what they need.

And that is why the support we provide in childhood matters far beyond the classroom.

The goal isn’t for a child to “outgrow” dyslexia. It is for them to grow into an adult who understands how they learn, recognizes their strengths, knows what supports them, and feels confident asking for the adjustments they need.

From the classroom to university to the workplace, inclusion needs to grow with them.

At The Valens Clinic, we believe that understanding how a person learns is the first step toward helping them thrive, at every age and at every stage.

Have you ever compared your child to another child as a way to encourage them?

“Look at your sister and try to do the same…”
“Your friend can do it, it means you can do it too.”

Most of us have done it. It often comes from a good place.. an attempt to motivate, encourage, or show them what they’re capable of. But comparison doesn’t always motivate the way we hope it will.

When children are compared to others, they can start focusing less on their own progress and more on where they believe they fall short. Over time, “Why can’t you be more like them?” can quietly become “Why am I not good enough?”

Every child has their own pace, strengths, challenges, and path.

Instead of:
“Look how well your sister is doing.”

Try:
“Look how far YOU have come.”

Because confidence grows when children learn to measure themselves against their own progress not someone else’s.

Social media isn’t going anywhere. Let’s teach our teens how to use it without losing themselves in it. 📱

Between endless scrolling, picture-perfect lives and the pressure to keep up, it’s easy for adolescents to get caught in the comparison trap.

So, what can we do as parents?

🔍 Question the feed. What they see online is a highlight reel, not the full story.

💭 Check in with their feelings. Does scrolling leave them inspired, connected, or feeling like they’re never enough? Help them recognise the difference.

🌿 Make offline life count. Friendships, hobbies, family time and real-life experiences matter just as much (if not more!).

💙 Separate likes from self-worth. Their value isn’t measured in followers, views or comments. And they need to hear that often.

The goal isn’t zero screen time. It’s raising teens who can scroll without losing sight of who they are.

Need support navigating adolescence, social media or digital boundaries?

Parenting is full of moments that make us laugh, question ourselves, and sometimes wonder, “Am I doing this right?” 💭

The Parent Book Club, led by Mira Nasr, is a space to step away from the pressure of getting everything right and have real, thoughtful conversations about raising children in today’s world. 🌱

Over 6 online sessions, parents will come together to explore the everyday challenges of parenting, share experiences, discover practical tools and learn from one another along the way. 📚💬

Based on the book “How to Raise Kids Who Aren’t Assholes” by Melinda Moyer.

For parents who want to raise good humans, not curate perfect childhoods. 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦✨

The Valens Clinic is proud to have taken part in the UoBD Psychology Conference 2026: Redefining Student Mental Health and Wellbeing, and to have presented our research poster alongside an inspiring community of students, researchers, educators, and practitioners. 🧠🇦🇪

What stood out most? The students and graduates who stopped by our stand. So much curiosity, so much interest in the field, and such smart, thoughtful questions. We loved hearing about your ambitions, your research interests, and where you hope psychology will take you.

Days like this make us especially proud to be part of a growing psychology and mental health community here in the UAE.

The future of the field is looking very bright. ✨

A missing letter. A sound spelled differently. Letters swapped or added. These aren’t just mistakes to correct but they can give us valuable clues about how a child is processing language and where the gaps may be.
