Why does a child with CAS respond late—even with tactile cues?
A delayed response doesn’t always mean the child doesn’t understand.
For children with Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS), responding may take extra time because of:
🔹 Difficulty with speech motor planning
🔹 Difficulty sequencing lip, tongue & jaw movements
🔹 Need for additional time to organize speech movements
🔹 Tactile cues providing guidance on where and how to move
🔹 Repeated, structured practice helping improve response efficiency
Remember: A delayed response can reflect the time needed for speech motor planning and ex*****on, not necessarily a lack of understanding.
Early support, patience, and consistent practice can make a meaningful difference.
