8,000,000 lives. Every single year. Gone because of to***co. ๐Ÿšจ

Can I be real with you for a second? ๐Ÿซ

Every week in my clinic, I meet patients who knew they should quit.
They just kept putting it off. One more month.
One more year.
Until their body made the decision for them.

So on this *World No To***co Day*, here is what I need you to know:

โœ… 20 minutes after quitting: heart rate drops
โœ… 12 hours after quitting: carbon monoxide clears your blood
โœ… 2 weeks after quitting: your lungs start clearing
โœ… 1 year after quitting: heart disease risk is CUT IN HALF

Your lungs are not replaceable.
Your habits are.

Do not wait for a diagnosis to make the decision.
Make it today.

๐Ÿ‘‡ Save this.
Share this. Someone in your life needs to see it right now.

Working as a pulmonologist in two countries, I have spent two decades looking at lungs damaged by to***co.

I have met patients who thought, โ€œIt wonโ€™t happen to me.โ€
Many of them wished they had stopped sooner.

The to***co industry sells an image. What it doesnโ€™t show are the breathless walks, the oxygen cylinders, the sleepless nights, the cancer diagnoses, and the families left wishing for more time.

This World No To***co Day, let us unmask the appeal.

If you smoke, today is a good day to quit.
If you have quit, stay the course.
If you are a parent, talk to your children about va**ng and ni****ne addiction.
If you are a healthcare professional, keep having the difficult conversations.

Every sh**ha, v**e or cigarette not smoked is a victory.
Every attempt to quit matters.
Every breath matters.

Choose healthy lungs. Choose life.

**The most extraordinary things in life sometimes fit inside four letters.**

When I was 5 I had a secret name for myself. Rose. I donโ€™t know where it came from. My little babyish stories were always about her.

She never really left.

My father offered her to God every morning with folded hands.

My mother braided her into my hair on festival days like it was a blessing.

My kids drew her in wobbly crayons on every Motherโ€™s Day card.

My husband gave me one single rose on Valentineโ€™s Day decades ago. Still the one that counts.

Rose let go of the door on Titanic. We never forgave her.

My band ELIXIR performed โ€œEvery Rose Has Its Thornโ€. We felt every single word. Young hearts always do.

And then there is ROSE in my bronchoscopy suite .
.
What we do during EBUS bronchoscopy to know in real time if weโ€™ve hit the right spot. No poetry there. Just precision.

Fatherโ€™s devotion.
Motherโ€™s tenderness.
Wobbly crayon lines from the people I made. A husbandโ€™s simplicity.
Hollywoodโ€™s greatest villain.
A young heartโ€™s ache.
A pulmonologistโ€™s tool.

Same word. Whole life.

Whatโ€™s your rose? ๐ŸŒน

I looked on in incredulity.
Strict? Me?

But he looked rather serious.

He said his 15 year old daughter finally followed her asthma treatment because I was firm about one thing: this is the only way her symptoms will get better.

No shortcuts.
No more waiting.

Then he said something that stunned me completely.

โ€œWeโ€™ve been to hundreds of doctors since she was a baby. Every single one told us sheโ€™d grow out of it after 12.
She didnโ€™t.
But after seeing you, she can talk at lengthโ€ฆshe can laugh with her girlfriends without going into spasms.โ€

My throat constricted and my chest went tight for a moment.

Sheโ€™s 15.
She can laugh freely now.
Completely.
Without bracing herself.
Without breathlessness or choking in the middle of a joke with her friends.

Do you know how much of โ€œbeing 15โ€ lives in exactly those moments?

Thatโ€™s her life.
Thatโ€™s priceless.

Iโ€™ve spent years cutting through the inhaler addiction myth because it quietly steals their teenage from kids even beyond their childhood.

Parents unknowingly preventing proper treatment.

My patient .. she chose to get better.
Her parents finally stayed with her through that choice.

I refuse to let the fear or the misinformation win.
Every. Single. Time.

Iโ€™ll take strict.
Happily. ๐Ÿ’™

If your child has asthma and someone told you theyโ€™ll grow out of it, please donโ€™t keep waiting.

Come in.
Letโ€™s talk.

Breathing freely is not a marathon win.
It is a right.

๐ˆ๐ฌ๐งโ€™๐ญ ๐€๐ˆ .

I want to tell you about something that happened early in my career.

I walked into a ward round feeling confident.
Charts reviewed. Plan ready.
I knew exactly what I was going to say about every patient.

My nurse looked at me a certain way before I reached the first bed.

Not alarm. Not panic. Just a look that said. Go back to bed 7. Something is wrong.

I went back. She was right.

No monitor had flagged anything.
No number had changed.
No algorithm had fired an alert.
Just a woman who had spent thousands of hours at that bedside knowing that something was different today.

That is clinical intelligence of the highest order.

We are living in an era where artificial intelligence is being poured into healthcare at extraordinary speed.
Predictive tools.
Smart diagnostics.
Robotic precision.
All of it genuinely remarkable.
And yet.

There is a photograph from the pandemic that I cannot forget.
A nurse sitting on a hospital floor in full PPE. Eyes closed. Not sleeping. Just finding ten seconds to collect herself before walking back in.

Five years later the applause has stopped. The world moved on to the next crisis. She never left.

Today there is a global shortage of nearly 6 million nurses.
Burnout that began in 2020 never fully healed. It just stopped making headlines.

She absorbed it. Showed up anyway. Remembered your motherโ€™s name. Held your fatherโ€™s hand at 3am when the family had gone home. Knew before the doctor did that today was going to be different.
No technology does that.
No technology ever will.

Today is World Nurses Day.

If a nurse ever made a difference to you or someone you love, this is the day to tell her. To tag her.
To make sure she knows that someone noticed.

Because the most sophisticated early warning tool in any ward has never once been a machine.

๐Ÿ’ฌ Tag a nurse who made a difference when it mattered most.
Tell us what she did.

๐Ÿ“ฉ And if you or someone you love needs a Healthcare team who understands that real medicine is human first, we are here for you.

She was told she was anxious.
She was actually undiagnosed.
There is a difference.

I want to tell you about a patient I see more often than I should.
She is somewhere between 40 and 60. Capable woman.
Runs her home.
Manages her family.
Shows up for everyone.

But she has not slept properly in years.
She knows something is wrong.
She has known for a while.
So she finally goes to the doctor and describes everything carefully.
The exhaustion that does not lift.
The sleep that never feels restful.
The fog that follows her through the day.

He listens. Nods. Writes something on his pad.
Anxiety. Here is a referral.

She goes home with the wrong answer. Again.

What nobody told her is that sleep disorders look completely different in women.
Sleep apnea in women does not always sound like loud snoring.
It feels like tiredness she cannot explain. Depression that does not respond to treatment.
A heaviness that everyone around her has quietly started calling her personality.

It is not her personality.
It is an undiagnosed condition.

And here is the part that should make all of us uncomfortable.

Women were excluded from medical research until 1993.
Every drug. Every diagnostic tool.
Every checklist a doctor uses today was built on male biology.
She was never the reference point.
She was an afterthought.

So when her symptoms do not match the textbook, the textbook gets believed.
Not her.

She makes 80% of the health decisions for her entire family.
Books everyone elseโ€™s appointments.
Follows up on everyone elseโ€™s results.

And is still waiting for someone to take hers seriously.

If this is your mother, your wife, your sister, your friend, the woman you had lunch with last Tuesday who mentioned she has not been sleeping well for two years now.

Please share this with her.

And if this is you, I want you to know something important.

You are not imagining it.
You are not too sensitive.
You were simply never properly evaluated.

I specialise in sleep disorders and I see women every week who have been dismissed, misdiagnosed, and sent home with the wrong answers for years.

You deserve a proper evaluation.
A real diagnosis.
A doctor who actually looks for what is keeping you awake.

And if you know a woman who needs to read this, tag her below or share this post.
She has waited long enough.

This yearโ€™s World Asthma Day theme is a reminder that control shouldnโ€™t be a privilege.
Antiโ€‘inflammatory inhalers save lives โ€” yet millions still canโ€™t access them.
Asthma is common, but preventable deaths should never be.
Letโ€™s raise our voice until every patient, in every postcode, gets the treatment that actually treats the disease โ€” not just the symptoms.
Access is not a luxury. Itโ€™s a lifeline.

I've had people reading the name on my door and think, Grand old lady!
Then peek in and find a petite, possibly teenage-looking person sitting at the doctor's desk.

Confused, they ask me: "๐‘Šโ„Ž๐‘’๐‘› ๐‘ค๐‘–๐‘™๐‘™ ๐ท๐‘Ÿ. ๐‘ƒ๐‘Ž๐‘‘๐‘š๐‘Ž๐‘ฃ๐‘Ž๐‘กโ„Ž๐‘ฆ ๐‘๐‘’ โ„Ž๐‘’๐‘Ÿ๐‘’?"

I'm a seasoned player now.. around two decades into this field and yet this is still my story. Happy about it? Sad? Bit of both actually.

Here are some uncomfortable facts.

A Harvard study across 1.5 million patients showed female physicians deliver lower mortality, fewer readmissions and measurably better outcomes.
The researchers called it a practice pattern gap.
Not knowledge. Not training.
How care is delivered.
Better guideline adherence, more patient-centred communication, more shared decision-making.

I call it a Saturday afternoon.

In India, women hold 52% of medical seats. Only 14% are in active practice. Brilliant enough to get in. The world just made it complicated to stay.
That tells you capability isn't the problem. Retention is.

And the ones who stay? They run departments, lead teams, carry outcomes. But still get mistaken for someone else.

The physician who remembers your name, reads your chart, and follows guidelines yet personalises your medicine is the one you need.

So next time you hesitate between two doors : choose hers.
Then tell someone why.

Tag a female doctor who made you stop and think:
๐—ฆ๐—ต๐—ฒ ๐—ถ๐˜€ ๐—ฒ๐˜…๐—ฐ๐—ฒ๐—ฝ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ป๐—ฎ๐—น!โฃ๏ธ

My son has a bedtime. 9pm. He appears at 10.

Every. Single. Night.

My husband and I have a look we give each other the moment we hear his footsteps. No words. It just means: here we go. He's been collecting something all day and now it's time to detonate it.

He has been doing this since he was four.

Last night he walked in with a torch pointed into the back of his own throat. Pyjamas. Completely calm. As if this were a normal Saturday night activity.

This was not even close to his strangest entrance.

He went straight to his father. ENT surgeon. 20 years of experience.

"Dad. Why do I have a uvula?"

Full answer. Speech. Swallowing. Gag reflex. Vibrates during sleep. Causes snoring.

"So it's a bell. In my throat. That rings when I sleep and wakes everyone else up."

The ENT surgeon had nothing to add.

He turned to me. I'm a Pulmonologist . Also 20 years.

"Mom. I was reading about lung scarring. Tell me what's... idiotic... okay the lung scarring one where nobody knows why. And the COP one where nobody knows why either. What's the difference?"

I explained. โ€œIdiopathicโ€ not idiotic! we looked for a cause, found nothing, named it anyway. The other โ€œcryptogenicโ€ we suspect a cause, still looking, also named it. Then he asked about โ€œessential โ€œ hypertension. No cause. No disease. We investigated. We accepted. We moved on.

He was quiet for a moment.

"Idiopathic: you don't know.
Cryptogenic: you don't know but you're looking.
Essential: you don't know and you've stopped."

Then: "You have three words for I don't know."

Two doctors. Forty years of medical education between us. Total silence.

Later he watched a thyroid surgery video with his dad. The recurrent laryngeal nerve on screen, looping all the way down into the chest before climbing back up to the throat.

"What nerve is that?"
"The vagus. Most important nerve in the entire body."

He repeated it slowly. Turned around.

"You named it vague."

Mouth open. Mouth closed.

Then, very quietly:

"What's happening in Dubai right now? March 2026. War on the news. Floods on the streets. Hail. Two doctors in the house. What's the diagnosis?"

I told him I'd take it to the committee.

Verdict: N.O. I.D.E.A Syndrome.

Nobody On the committee Identified, Diagnosed, Explained or Agreed.

He switched off his torch.

"You've been doing this for over 20 years. Combined."

He went to bed.

He is 12. BLS certified. Humour: bone dry.

We are not sure who is winning.
We are fairly sure it is not us.
