Do You Really Need an Endoscopy?

Not every stomach problem requires an endoscopy. But when certain symptoms persist, looking deeper can help find the real cause.

An upper GI endoscopy may be considered when you experience:

🔹 Difficulty swallowing
🔹 Persistent vomiting
🔹 Blood in vomit or black stools
🔹 Unexplained weight loss
🔹 Iron-deficiency anaemia
🔹 Persistent or recurring upper-abdominal symptoms

An endoscopy allows a gastroenterologist to directly examine the oesophagus, stomach and duodenum and, when appropriate, take biopsies or perform treatment.

The goal isn’t simply to “find a problem.”
It’s to understand what’s causing your symptoms.

Don’t self-diagnose or ignore persistent symptoms. The right evaluation can lead to the right treatment.

IBS vs IBD — They May Feel Similar, But They’re Not the Same.

Abdominal pain, bloating, diarrhoea and changes in bowel habits can occur in both IBS and IBD. But the underlying causes—and the way they’re diagnosed and treated—are very different.

🔹 IBS — Irritable Bowel Syndrome
A disorder of gut–brain interaction. The digestive tract may look normal, but its function and sensitivity can be altered.

🔸 IBD — Inflammatory Bowel Disease
A group of conditions, mainly Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, involving chronic inflammation of the digestive tract.

The key difference:

IBS = Function
IBD = Inflammation

🚨 Don’t simply assume persistent digestive symptoms are “just IBS.” Blood in the stool, unexplained weight loss, anaemia, persistent/severe symptoms or symptoms that wake you from sleep deserve medical evaluation.

Similar symptoms. Different causes. Different treatment.
The right diagnosis leads to the right care.

🟢 You Could Be at Risk Without Even Knowing It.

On this World Hepatitis Day, it’s time to understand a disease that often progresses silently until significant liver damage has already occurred.

Did you know there are 5 types of hepatitis, and each spreads differently?

🟡 Hepatitis A – Through contaminated food or water.
🔴 Hepatitis B – Through infected blood, unprotected s*x, shared needles, or from mother to baby during childbirth.
🟢 Hepatitis C – Primarily through contact with infected blood and may remain symptom-free for years.
🔵 Hepatitis D – Occurs only in people who already have Hepatitis B.
🟣 Hepatitis E – Usually spreads through contaminated water and can be particularly serious during pregnancy.

⚠️ Many people don’t know they have hepatitis until liver damage has already begun.

The good news? Many forms of hepatitis are preventable, and early diagnosis can help prevent serious complications such as liver cirrhosis, liver failure, and liver cancer.

Protect Your Liver:

✔️ Get vaccinated against Hepatitis A & B (where recommended)
✔️ Practice safe hygiene and consume safe food and water
✔️ Avoid sharing needles or personal grooming items
✔️ Practice safe s*x
✔️ Get tested if you believe you may be at risk or have persistent liver-related symptoms

This World Hepatitis Day, take a moment to protect one of your body’s most important organs.

🚨 Don’t Ignore These Symptoms—Your Gut Could Be Trying to Tell You Something.

Many digestive symptoms are caused by common conditions, but some can be early warning signs of a more serious problem. If you’ve been experiencing any of the following, it’s time to consult a gastroenterologist:

🔴 Blood in stool
🔴 Persistent constipation or diarrhea
🔴 Ongoing abdominal pain
🔴 Unexplained anemia
🔴 Sudden weight loss
🔴 Symptoms lasting more than 2–3 weeks

These symptoms don’t always indicate colon cancer—but they should never be ignored.

Early evaluation can help identify the cause and, when necessary, detect conditions at a stage when treatment is most effective.

Your digestive health matters. Listen to your body, and don’t delay seeking expert medical advice.
