It travels in a hole between the bones in the back of the head....

I am talking about the vagus nerve. The main nerve that goes to the digestive system. What does osteopathy have to do with digestion?

Cranial Osteopathy addresses the “vagus nerve”. Slight pressure on the base of the skull will affect the vagus nerve causing problems with gastrointestinal tract.
Osteopaths use gentle manual techniques to release the compression around the cranial nerves. As these nerves are connected to the digestive tract, it helps experience relief from gastrointestinal problems.

Cranial Osteopathy helps babies experience relief in symptoms of gas, reflux and colic.

As a pediatric osteopath, I would suggest getting cranial treatment within the
first month of your baby’s life. A cranial treatment as early as possible after birth can lead to less restrictions in later life.

Falls are the most common cause of injuries for all age groups. Babies are especially at risk of falling as they learnt to roll, climb and walk. No matter how careful you are, you can’t prevent all accidents, so it’s important to know what to do when your baby falls.

Seeing or hearing your baby fall is likely to make you panic. But pause and assess first. Sometimes babies need to see the doctor after a fall and sometimes they’re fine.

If he cries for less than 5 minutes, usually he is just stressed from the fall.

If crying persists for more than 5 minutes, then I suggest to visit the pediatrician.

Now if crying persists for more than 20 minutes, then go directly to the emergency.

Remember that 90% of babies fall during their first year of life! So you are not a bad parent if this happens.

How do you know whether your baby growth is on track?

Preventive Checkup with an Osteopath for Healthy Growth!

✅ When you take your baby within 1 month to an osteopath, we can examine and detect if the baby has suffered any birth defects or has any abnormalities.

✅ For baby’s between 1-3 months we check for flat heads, torticollis, tongue tie etc

✅ We check spinal mobility, cranial symmetry, etc. when the baby is at or below 6 months.

✅ And for 1 year old we check everything and also check leg development, digestion, etc.are on track or not.

Take your baby to an experienced pediatric osteopath within the first month of baby’s life. When we assess them as early as possible after birth, we have lesser restrictions as they grow.

The physical examination will focus on the musculoskeletal system and will assess the alignment of the spine, hips and limbs.

Osteopaths are able to assess the physical balance and symmetry of the whole body. Interestingly, we are also able to predict mobility issues that may arise later on and to correct them before it manifests.

Reflux is when a baby brings up milk, or is sick, during it shortly after feeding. It’s very common and usually gets better on its own.

Reflux usually starts before a baby is 8 weeks old and gets better by the time they’re 1.

Symptoms of reflux in babies include:
- bringing up milk or being sick during or shortly after feeding
- coughing or hiccuping when feeding
- being unsettled during feeding
- swallowing or gulping after burping or feeding
- crying and not settling
- not gaining weight as they’re not keeping enough food down

Sometimes babies may have signs of reflux but will not bring up milk or be sick. This is known as silent reflux.

Osteopathic treatment aims to treat the structural issues that are at the root of reflux. As osteopaths, we treat the cause, not just the symptoms.

In this video, you can see a demonstration of how I would conduct the gentle osteopathic manipulations on a newborn to relieve reflux symptoms. This is only a small portion of 20-60 min long osteopathic treatment session for the baby.

Babies are affected by the childbirth experience, no matter how it was. Every type of delivery has its own set of mild or severe physical strain that it puts on the baby’s head, neck and other areas.

However, it is important to note that the severity of the blocks caused by childbirth is not decided by the type of delivery.

So for example, it is not always the case that if it was a difficult delivery, long labour, with instruments (forceps, vacuum) or c-section, that the newborn will not be able to recover properly until long after. Maybe they will recover on their own within two or three days!

And on the opposite end, it is not always the case that an easy, quick delivery, perhaps with a smaller baby, guarantees that the newborn will be free of all blocks and won’t have underlying impacts. Maybe these babies will need several osteopathic sessions to assist their healing.

The point is that an easy or difficult delivery is not the best way to decide how far a baby would be impacted.

It is for this reason that it is strongly recommended all parents take their newborns to an osteopath at one week after birth. This is the only way to check your newborn’s skull, neck, jaw and more for the common signs of post-childbirth strains.

WHAT ARE THE EFFECTS?

- feeding issues
- latching difficulty
- disturbed sleep
- colic

are some of the common effects of unreleased physical blocks from childbirth.

Again, if you are expecting to deliver soon, give your baby the best start to life and prevent many issues just by taking him to the osteopath at one week.
