Metal Health( Managing Stress )
As the modern society has become more complex, various stresses are plaguing modern people in various places. And people who have mental disorders due to stress once again have difficulties in social life. The cause of stress can be work life, interpersonal relationships, and economic problems. While solving these things is the best way to relieve stress, however many people are unable to solve these problems suddenly, so people may experience mental and physical problem.
The physiological reactions caused by stress include pain, insomnia, diarrhea, constipation, loss of appetite, gastrointestinal disorders, headaches, and chest pain. Mental reactions include anger, attention distraction, anxiety, depression, and psychological fatigue. Oriental medicine is treated using 12 different meridians, name of 12 meridians, which are Lung Meridian, large intestine Meridian, Stomach Meridian, Pancreas Meridian, Heart Meridian, Small Intestine Meridian, Gall Bladder Meridian, Liver Meridian, Triple Energiger Meridian, Pericardium Meridian, Bladder Meridian, and Kidney Meridian. In Oriental medicine, the mind is connected to the body, so the disease of the body can be a mental disease, and, conversely, the stress can lead to a disease of the body. Also, in Oriental medicine, seven minds belong to five Internal Organs, for example, anxiety, Sadness belong to the lungs, anger belongs to the liver, thoughts belong to the pancreas, fear belong to the kidneys, and joy the heart Belongs to And the heart rules all the minds.
Therefore, Acupuncture can treat both mental and body diseases at the same times. For example, depression belongs to the disease of Lung Meridian, diarrhea or indigestion belongs to the stomach Meridian, large intestine Meridian, Pancreas Meridian. When several meridians are treated by Acupuncture, these symptoms, which is related with meridian, can be treated.
There are mainly two mental illnesses caused by stress, one with depression and the other with Anger Control Disorder.
Depression in Oriental Medicine, when the lung function is falling, feels lethargy and easily feels sadness and negative mood. Usually, in Oriental medicine, lethargy comes due to lack of energy, which strengthens the digestive system to make the process of making energy from food efficiently and actively, and sends the energy to the lungs to strengthen the lung function, reducing sadness or worry. After treatment, people become more positive and energetic, and the expression appears on their faces.
The other, the Anger Control Disorder, does not control anger, and angers people around them abnormally, causing a lot of interpersonal problems. In the Oriental medicine, anger belongs to the liver, and the hypersensitivity of the liver makes people angry, and anger damages the liver again, making people more angry. So, in order to treat anger disorders, the liver needs to be stabilized. The reason you need to treat your heart is that if your heart is active, your liver is also likely to become more active. Many patients say that patients treated with anger control disorder screamed and became angry in the same situation as before, but now they can refrain from anger even in the same situation.
Oriental medicine considers various diseases from a comprehensive point of view, and also considers the association between different diseases. As explained above, stress is not only a symptom, but also causes a variety of physiological and mental illnesses, so treatment should be done from a comprehensive perspective.
Acupuncture is an very effective treatment that can treat the patient’s mental and body health together.
BIOCHEMICAL MECHANISMS OF ACUPUNCTURE
The autonomic nervous system (ANS), which is comprised of the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) and the parasympathetic nervous system (PNS), regulates the internal conditions necessary for existence (homeostasis). Information is received from the body and external environment and a response is delivered by either the SNS, which releases excitatory signals, or the PNS which releases signals for relaxation. These signals direct the body to react in very different ways, such as increasing the heart rate and contraction force, or by reducing blood pressure and slowing the heart rate. It is exciting to know that studies show acupuncture has an effect on both the SNS and the PNS, as some further examples presented below reveal.
One of the most sensitive measures of the body’s ability to cope with stress is something called Heart Rate Variability (HRV). Rather than beating consistently at the same rate like a metronome, the heart actually changes its rate based on its fine-tuned response to the environment. A higher HRV has been associated with better health in all domains, including mental health and low levels of anxiety. Acupuncture has been shown to improve the body’s ability to cope with stress through improving HRV.
When the body is under stress, an area of the brain called the hypothalamus releases neurochemicals, and research shows that acupuncture can calm this response.
Acupuncture has also been shown to increase the release of endorphins, the body’s own ‘feel-good’ chemicals, which play an important role in the regulation of physical and emotional stress responses such as pain, heart rate, blood pressure and digestive function.
All of these acupuncture mechanisms have a direct effect on reducing anxiety.
The conventional treatment of anxiety primarily involves some combination pharmacological and psychological interventions.
