Winter is coming in UAE! So here are the Most Common Skin Conditions during Cold Season:
1. DRY SKIN – This is very common during winter months, a time where humidity level drops and the air outside is cold and dry. The moisture in your skin evaporates more quickly, making your skin feel dry, tight and flaky leading to skin itching. To take care of this, use extra- rich moisturizer night and day!
2. KERATOSIS PILARIS – Also known as “Chicken Skin”. If you already have KP, the change in temperatures can initiate the appearance of small, red or white bumps on dry and rough skin surfaces. Aside from keeping your skin deeply moisturized, if condition worsens, see your Dermatologist for best skin care treatment.
3. CHAPPED SKIN (Lips) – Dry environment and lack of moisture causes cracked hands, chapped lips and rough legs. If you spend a lot of time exposed in the dry winter wind, sun exposure and dehydration, you can expect chapped skin or the more common chapped lips. Moisturizing is the basic essential part of skin care during the cold months, so lather up rich moisturizer on your skin and soothing lip balm for your chapped lips. Be sure to use a product that suits your skin type, for proper assessment, it is best to see your Skin Doctor.
4. DEHYDRATED SKIN – Dryness and dehydration are not similar, they actually refer to two totally different skin conditions. Dehydrated skin lacks water and dry skin lacks oil. Dehydrated skin tends to look dull and feel tight, even when properly moisturized. With dry skin, lack of moisture (lipid content) can result in rough, dry or flaky skin. If this is your skin, make sure you’re using the right moisturizing ingredients. We recommend oils because they pe*****te deep into the skin and allow the skin to breathe (rather than creating a barrier, which many facial lotions will do). To defy this, lay off the exfoliation and harsh cleansers immediately and embrace gentle products instead. Check with your dermatologist to find out what’s going to work best for you.
5. DANDRUFF/ HAIR FALL – Yes, your scalp is still a part of your skin. Dry, cold air and hot showers can trigger itchy, flaky scalp. Dandruff can have several causes and an addition of hair loss, for better skin and hair treatment, see your Skin Specialist.
So, what is the best approach for keeping our skin and body healthy during cold months? Moisturizing and Hydration. Our bodies are made of 70 percent water, which keeps our cells plump and healthy. If you’re not drinking enough, your body (and your skin) gets dehydrated, which can make you look and feel dried-up. Make sure you’re getting plenty of fluids in the wintertime, even if you don’t feel thirsty. Avoid caffeinated drinks, which will make you lose even more water. Instead, stick to water, soup, decaf coffee and tea, and herbal tea. It might be tempting to skip the body lotion when your skin is covered up in winter clothing, but it’s just as important to moisturize in the winter as it is in the summer, even if your arms and legs aren’t on display. Dry skin can get itchy, flaky, and uncomfortable if you don’t use the right skin moisturizer. Apply a rich body lotion immediately after showering to lock in moisture. Apply again before going outside and before going to bed. Look for ingredients like glycerin, which holds moisture in your skin and fights dehydration. Try to shower or bathe in warm, not hot water, and limit showers and baths to 10 minutes, just enough to clean the dirty bits. Pat dry — don’t rub — with a soft towel. For best assessment and treatment, see your Skin Doctor.
