We're talking about Prana (Chi/Qi/Vital energy), the importance of taking care of your Prana and methods - both practical Yoga techniques and things you can do to be aware of your Prana throughout your day, whilst raising some money together for Covid Relief in India. There's a reason why Devi and babies appear "pure". Their Prana is potent as they are closer to it's origin whereas adults have to work subtly on clearing the constant disturbances that accumulate day to day. We have to be conscious and attentive about how we are expelling Prana in order to keep refining, cleaning and channeling it and in turn be capable of self healing, be well, healthy and yes develop strong immune systems.

The second wave of COVID-19 in India has devastated the country. Lack of healthcare infrastructure, medical oxygen and even basic necessities like food and ration has burdened the country’s population.

Breathe for India is about harnessing the popular practise of Pranayama by hosting classes all over the world... practitioners, brands, celebs, influencers are sharing their appreciation and respect for this powerful scientific life support tool at the same time raising money.

P.S. I know I've been quiet. There has been so much content that I am silently digesting and learning 6 months into the massive universe of mamahood. I trust what is meant to be shared will over time when there's time. Growth and presence continues to be at the heart of my calling in this journey! 🤍

~ Friday Diwali uplifting feels! 🍍🎆🕯️🏵️
Happy Happy weekend lovely people! How many ways can you wrap a sarong?

Sharing the love as we enter the weekend and Diwali weekend. All about celebrating the existence of light in the shadows of the dark, remembering the importance of tapas and working for Dharma (truth, what's right, virtues). It's this time we also welcome in so much love, light, abundance, wealth in all aspects...we clean, we clear, we adorn, we colour...we elevate our internal and external environment in order to refine our energies and welcome in the new. This feels v appropriate for where Nik and I are, clearing like crazy and making space for 🍼👼

On the point of tapas the return of Rama after 14 years of exile, defeating Ravana ("good over evil) is symbolic to recognising the importance of keeping up our own pursuits as spiritual seekers, life seekers, truth seekers...always looking to act from a place of knowledge/wisdom over ignorance, Buddhi (wisdom, higher mind) over the ego, choosing to elevate and act from a place of equanimity rather than fleeting emotive states. It's ultimately signifying that inner battle or conflicting dialogue between frustration and calm, expectation and acceptance, control and surrender and so forth...navigating the dualities and choices we make quietly at every moment. We are always so so much more greater and expansive than we think.

~ Subtle movements vs gross
I zombified my way to the Yoga may today. Literally listened to a voice inside that said "Neesh, although you're feeling tired, out of it and want to rest but 'should' be clearing, clearing, just go. Rest or move Neesha??" I went for move and with it breath, nature and a whole lot more...

Because of tiredness, every movement felt purposeful and helpful and so much more meaningful and worthwhile. I must say this is third trimester for me anyway, the smallest of movements and action in general is feeling so potent and valuable. I have even noticed more vividly, how subtle movements that "didn't do much" for me before just do so so much for me now. Hence the small wiggles and style here.

What you can't see which is ever so innate is the amazing shift and release I feel when I give up the weight of my brain and tired head to the floor, the yum toe and ankle stretch when I curl my toes under, the intense feeling of breath through my back where the skin and muscles have been stretched forward by the weight of the baby...yes my back breathes in a way it never has before and gives space to the diaphragm that has been squished up lol.

I'm also working quietly on strength here but it doesn't look like it. I'm actively engaging my hip and pelvic joints inward whilst simultaneously drawing them out which involves hugging the hips, glutes and thighs inward with gentle deep abdominal engagement in and up to help with my pelvic, lower back and sacrum stability during a time where my joints are hurting so need both relaxation and support. This resistance and proprioception work feels amazing and tbh I teach and practise stretching this way so that flexibility is always balancing with strength. This is all happening here on the mat. Embodied, subtle, purposeful as oppose to pursuing poses or a sequence.

So here we have it movements needn't be big or gross at all to be effective. In fact less is more and smart. Just like when you see someone strategically working out at the gym for example, they may not be exerting and sweating bricks. These are the people I love to observe and learn from.

~ Dropping into the slow flow
There's many a insights I wanted to share with you over these last days but as things are, I am taking time!

Everything to me is all about creating space and time in this journey so I'm choosing to roll with how I feel but it's a constant case of toning down my activity. What this actually entails is being a lot more mindful and diligent about the thoughts that I am creating within my mind...CREATIVE thoughts CREATE a desire to act which means I am putting myself in position to HAVE TO act. So long as we have thoughts there will always be action. This is what I'm working on atm.

If we want to act out of choice not automaton, take care of how we expel our energy or just simply feel confident that our actions are aligned to the right intentions, goals and path then we must start with slowing thoughts, to do lists, plans so we can then see this manifest physically in our lives, so we feel more empowered and actually somewhat more "in control". This is not promoting productivity at all, far from it but rather encouraging meaningful activity that serves to exhaust our root vasanas/imprinted desires. The aim from a spiritual perspective is to really understand our own temperament from birth, what have we come with that needs exhausting, what deep desires and skills, talents, then focus on action which uses these to the best of our ability. This way we are not in action which goes against our innate nature, which causes anger, irritation, frustration, depression and dis-ease!

If you feel a calling to slow or you are finding your actions are out of control you might be met with resistance or some sort of reverb as that's what happened recently to me. My body was yearning to relax with quite sever SI related pains inhibiting me from walking but things weren't quite slowing around me until well, I started to say no to action and being proactive and baby/motherhood information. Now's my time to really be with myself. Now heading to the mall in this exciting outing to feel clothes rather than navigate the web, I wonder why is everyone around me walking so damn fast?! 😃🤣

~ My Journey and Me talk & dance

It was really lovely to have the opportunity to pause and reflect on my journey and relationship with the arts. Grateful to .sahai who have curated this wonderful initiative, thanks a million for asking me to be part of this series which explores the challenges of pursuing art whilst managing work and personal life, which might often seem so seperate and non related to art life but is it? In reality as south Asian dancer artists how do we navigate this and what does this all look and feel like?

I just admit I felt pretty flat and low vibe when recording this but I still feel it gave me the quiet to just actually appreciate and honour the complete journey. All of it. I think the biggest takeaway for me was the perspective that nothing is separate from the art form, from dance in general...every part of my day, my life, married life, relationships and experiences inform and influence my dance.

The evolution of a dancer and the creativity that flows through is ever so intimate, drawing upon the depths of your being and seeping through all the emotional, mental, physical impressions that life exposes you too. So rather looking at dance, mamahood to be, work, family as seperate acts...rather than looking at Kathak dance, Contemporary dance explorations, spiritual study, wisdom, yoga, gym, meditation as seperate...it's one hybrid somatic intrinsic experience. That's the beauty of dance. It has no linear identity 🙏 man I wish I said it on this way during the interview! Well it's in there just in different words.

~ Introducing Moving Mudras
It's been an eventful few weeks with quite a few things happening smack bang in the midst of the Navaratri, the divine feminine festival. Interestingly enough, all have been quite very aligned to the purpose of this festival. Am pausing to take it all in.

Dance Video, Indian blessing ceremony and English Baby shower ending with this beautiful Navaratri event Indian classical dancer peers of the Bharatanatyam art form and myself, coming from the Kathak art form.

Recently behind the scenes, as the universe does, I have been united with the lovely Bharatanatyam artist and kindred spirit friend and the new unfolding collective .mudras.arts. Dubai is quite a blank canvas when it comes to South Asian Arts, still plenty a work to be done to bring awareness and opportunities to the community via arts and community partners so I am so so so happy to finally meet these amazing women and professional peers and see where our synergies take us.

Moving Mudras was founded to bring Classical Indian Dance forms to a wider, more mainstream audience and to share the culture, depth and magic of the classical arts as a tool for inner transformation and dialogue between cultures and different art forms. It's exactly what I believe in, using the rich form and it's contents to authentically connect with people.

This performance sharing was a wonderful evening where we came together in collabo with the lovely to share and celebrate this rich abundant festival. It was hectic so am so grateful to Bav for all her hard work and grateful that at 32 weeks and limping due to some sacro pains and no time to rehearse that I could at least share this Saraswati piece that sits comfortably in my body and is so fitting for Navaratri!

~ Shedding and Making Space
One thing I've come to notice about the Prenatal journey is, contrary to what is conventionally systemized, there are far far more phases and transitions involved. Changes are not limited to first, second, third trimester. The process isn't as black and white as conception, gestation, birth, gestation, postpartum, motherhood. In fact the lines are blurry and there are multiple waves of growth, change and transition including several growth spurts, physiological and emotional, mental, spiritual shifts all dancing around and intertwining with each other...however all these multi-faceted movements are still profoundly purposeful and meaningful in the evolution of what is actually taking place.

You can wake up suddenly one day and feel something lingering inside you (not the baby itself yep!) but some feelings or sensations that are calling to be expressed and connected to are honourable, worthy of space and time. I've said it before that often these can be not so pretty raw, intense emotions. And after going through some moments of my own I realize how vital it is to sit and connect with these vulnerable moments as it is to fly high on the joyous ones. The impression that a Prenatal woman is always glowing and happy needs to go bcos special and magical doesn't always look like this...it can look and feel scary, confusing, tired and sad. The meltdowns are just as golden 💛

32 weeks now I feel a call to savour the moments. I can feel an onset of mourning or grief related shedding needs to connect to. As you get into the flow of carrying life silently, enjoying the surprises that comes with it, there's a reality that this baby needs to come out and tangibly exist, where you will no longer be alone but being called upon to provide and care for this life. I feel like my needs atm are to slow, connect and embrace the whole journey, the silent moments with myself and with this creation inside that won't come back again and make room and space for the next chapter. I am sure there are magical surprises there that await but if I haven't made peace and processed all of this now then how can I be present enough to notice them?

~ Navaratri, a time to harness energy.
These 9 nights in the Hindu Calendar are cleverly designed to remind us to work in harmony with the sceince and cyclical nature of all things...creation, preservation and transformation.

I love the approach that my Gita, Spiritual teacher shared. She said these 9 days are about "focusing on how to generate energy, sustain energy and release whatever might be draining you." which makes sense as we see from the below journey of transformation through to creation.

The Hindu Calendar is filled wonderfully with these auspicious festivals throughout the year as gateways to sharpen our tools and gather back the Prana we are leaking (which is exactly the aim of Yoga practise! Hindu rituals and Yoga merge as they were systemized together). When people do this collectively the channel, gateway makes it easier for us to tap into that energy.

The first 3 nights we focus on Goddess Durga, a Mahadevi, great goddess of power, strength transformation and inner protection. Shiva's consort, she helps us to cleanse away our ego. She begins this 9 day process of inner awakening, using her sword of wisdom to remove delusions and steer us away from ego-centric desires and toward collective gain, non individualism.

The second 3 nights, we are ready for Goddess Laxmi's energy, Vishnu's consort (the preserver). She fills us with abundance, virtues and wealth and helps us to direct our awakened potential.

The last 3 nights, our mindset and state is ready to imbibe highest knowledge of scriptures so Saraswati, Brahmas consort, enters. She reminds us of the importance of pursuing selfless worldly goals in line with internal fulfillment.

The auspicious 10th day = Victory!

~ Dance Project in motion
We are shooting a dance video tomorrow! 🙏 Here's a little behind the scenes teaser. It's a special one as it was birthed from a desire to capture and express my own experience and understanding of being Pregnant, a complete embodied and internal journey of the various forces at play that orchestrate this incredible design of birthing new life.

Its become quite naturally a tribute to the soul within me and to the souls that so many woman around the world have brought into this world. It also represents the transition into motherhood as well as those who have transitioned through pregnancy loss. Both are sacred, powerful and deserve space to be recognised. So happens it's too.
There is a lot more behind this piece, why the music and gestures, mudras and symbolisms used. It's an expression that honors the feminine and "her story" which is very much about the opportunity that pregnancy provides for listening to our own feminine wisdom which has sort of got lost along the way. It is a container for the philosophy, personal experience and knowledge that I have been connecting to during this time, including my evolving connection to the work of Prenatal Yoga.

~ Visceral
~ Ebb and Flow..these two magical words have been churning during this Prenatal journey and I am having a serious case of to these words!

Not only do these words hold truth during the experience of gestation but also when it comes to birthing and mothering...it's all very very visceral and all very very ebb and flow! It's a highly sensitive time for women to ride the waves and just tune in and go with their deep inner feelings of intuition and gut. And personally I feel this is the most important work, to keep connected to your self as no matter how much information you absorb or things you buy, the inner safety and sanctum, answers and guidance always comes from within. It becomes punctuated during pregnancy into motherhood as every baby is different and every woman's experience is different. Sharing is wonderful and a village of women is needed but decisions are ultimately there to explore and own which requires anchoring confidence, trust and well your Goddess within! ✨

The interesting thing is that whilst the experience is so deeply visceral, on all levels and certainly physically and even emotionally. The emotions, thoughts at the time you're having them can feel very real. What actually helps to make everything the body is trying to do, an intelligent curation of hormones and restructuring on all levels, work harmoniously and naturally, is to do the opposite...very deeply...quieten, sit within and surrender, relax, trust, breathe. Ride the waves by being really present not anticipating or wanting to rush them but seeing everything as purposeful. All the changes, "pain" and emotions.

The whole prenatal journey has been like this...phases, waves...each trimester even makes for certain types of activity as nothing remains the same for long and I know I'm being coached into what's to come! I would happily hang out in the abstract, mysticism of the whole pregnancy but now heading into 7 months I'm being pushed into the practical prep of consumerism, antenatal and organization...here goes!

~ Arrive as you are. A Mantra worth keeping in your back pocket on rinse and repeat ☀️🙏
I find personally it's so important to keep affirming and remembering to just accept yourself as you are. To be your authentic self and love yourself AS YOU ARE. To remember that noone in the entire world experiences or sees the world in the same way as you do and that the best thing we can do for each other as a collective is to just be ourselves and share that.
I have noticed that one of my patterns is to experience lows where I forget what I'm about or question, dismiss or actually don't quite see my unique gifts and talents or accept my interests. I end up spiralling with self worth, self critical dialogue and self trust issues. And I tell you it can debilitating and overwhelming. We all experience something similar to some extent or another as we are where to keep remembering our innate power and dissolve limiting ideas. When this happens I have to go back to basics and look at the dialogue I'm really having with myself. Often it's simply this mantra that helps.
During pregnancy I have noticed there has been some super intense feeling around these themes...especially when there's birthing of not only a soul but your own self into motherhood, a becoming of someone you are yet to meet. And I'm so grateful for it, I'm totally syked to meet and unleash a newer version of me that is whilst nourishing the familiar parts of me into new territory and perspective...I don't believe there is loss, I feel there is gain and pregnancy is a potent time to drop deeper into the experience and intimately experience what "feminine" really feels and manifests like. But it still it takes work to empower yourself and feel like you are capable and will have capacity to manifest your own excellence and calling, just as your child will be "someone" with their own authenticity and excellence to share. Growth doesn't stop.

~ Marriage & Growth
Where did 7 years go?💍I tell you where...into a whole lot of learning, growth and personal accountability (with an undercurrent of love and adventure of course) 💛🙏
As we are in the year of significant change and expanding our humble nuclear family here, to me it's all about expansion and growth and it always has been.
When it comes to marriage, having children...there's not much talk about the challenges, the resistance, the tears, the time it takes to work on identifying yourself in a new shared context and yes adapting. I never foresaw myself getting married or necessarily having children. I've gone on quite a growth journey to firstly get to these milestones (hence at 38 having a child!) and then to be in the journey itself does require some real continued deep self development work and realisations, personal ownership and commitment to do "the work" so that you can better work in partnership...for me this has been my experience anyway.
As they say, your partner is your mirror to help you shed away limitations, ego ("I-ness" and "My-ness") and bring you closer to your true self and then bringing a child into this world goes deeper, bringing you closer to the true essence of unconditional love, intuition and Shakti (I like to think of this motherhood phase as housing a "guest" for a short while to assist him/her on their larger soul).
On both occasions my anchor, my trust in taking these steps have not been about longing or filling a void or looking for love. I had arrived into these knowing that I can only find that within. I never set out to get married and was unsure about children but it was always respecting the signs, having faith and deep trust in the system. Knowing I am given what I need to grow so that I can fulfill the reasons why my soul came here to begin with. I can say 7 years later, I am so so grateful to have followed that truth and to be here loving Mr M not only just bcos of but in spite of...it takes time, experience and a whole lotta messy growth!
