An ADHD assessment looks at how attention, impulsivity and executive functioning affect a person across different areas of life.

A clinician may explore:
- current symptoms and everyday difficulties
- attention, organisation, working memory and impulse control
- developmental history and childhood experiences
- other conditions or circumstances that could contribute to similar difficulties

Online ADHD tests can identify symptoms associated with ADHD, but they cannot establish a diagnosis.

A comprehensive assessment also helps clarify whether ADHD is the most appropriate explanation for the difficulties being experienced, or whether other factors need attention.

Why does your child hold it together at school and then fall apart at home?

Some children put a great deal of effort into managing themselves at school. At home, that effort can show up as irritability, emotional outbursts, withdrawal or difficulty managing everyday routines.

What happens after school can give parents useful insight into how a child is coping during the day. Giving them time to decompress, noticing changes in behaviour and seeking professional advice when concerns persist can help support their emotional wellbeing.

Follow Vivamus for practical guidance on children’s mental health, or book a consultation with our team if you have concerns about your child.

Ever had a disagreement with your partner and realised you have had almost the exact same conversation before?

Recurring conflict often points to a deeper pattern in the relationship. A small disagreement can activate feelings such as rejection, criticism, insecurity or not feeling heard.

Over time, the original issue can become almost secondary. What keeps the argument going is the cycle itself.

Marriage Counselling & Couples Therapy can help partners step back from this cycle and understand what is happening underneath the conflict. At Vivamus, therapy creates space to explore these patterns, the needs behind them and more constructive ways of communicating.

What should you do when someone you care about is struggling?

When someone close to you is going through a difficult period, being present and supportive can make it easier for them to open up and seek help. Here are four ways to approach the conversation:

1. Start with an observation
Gently acknowledge what you have noticed and ask how they have been feeling.

2. Listen before offering advice
Give them space to talk without immediately trying to solve the problem or tell them what to do.

3. Ask what kind of support they need
They may want someone to listen, practical help or support in finding professional care.

4. Keep the conversation open
If they are not ready to talk, respect that and check in again later. Avoid minimising their experience or telling them to simply “stay positive”.

Therapy can change more than how you feel in a particular moment. Progress can also appear in the way you understand yourself, respond to difficult situations and relate to other people.

You may begin to notice that you:

recognise emotional triggers earlier
pause before reacting to familiar situations
recover more quickly after difficult moments
understand recurring patterns in your behaviour
communicate your needs more clearly
set boundaries with greater confidence
use coping strategies more consistently
approach situations that once felt overwhelming with more flexibility

Progress can be gradual and may become clearer when you look back over time.

If you would like to explore your own patterns and goals in therapy, our team is here to help.

Could something beyond school be making it difficult?

Morning distress, physical complaints or a sudden reluctance to attend school can indicate that something feels difficult to manage. Anxiety, social challenges, learning difficulties and other concerns may contribute.

A helpful starting point is to listen carefully, look for patterns and understand what your child is experiencing. Identifying the underlying difficulty can guide the right support.

Every morning turns into an argument about getting ready. Could ADHD be part of the picture?

Children with ADHD may find routines, organisation and transitions particularly demanding. Clear expectations, visual structure and meaningful encouragement can help them manage everyday tasks with greater independence.

The right tools should make routines easier to navigate, rather than placing all the responsibility on the child to stay organised.

Why does school still feel so difficult, though your child tries hard?

Falling behind or finding school overwhelming does not necessarily mean a child lacks motivation. Attention, confidence, emotional wellbeing, learning differences and difficult experiences can all affect how they manage school demands.

Understanding what is making learning difficult helps parents, schools and clinicians identify appropriate support.

Your child gets good grades, but what’s that experience like for him or her?

Some children achieve strong results while using a great deal of energy to keep up. They may appear organised in class, yet struggle with routines, homework, transitions or emotional overwhelm at home. Some children fear failure or letting their parents down, causing them to put too much pressure on themselves.

Looking beyond grades can help parents understand whether a child needs additional support. Academic performance is only one part of how a child is managing.

Why can you struggle to focus for hours, yet find it difficult to start everyday tasks?

ADHD is a long-term condition that can affect attention, organisation and motivation. Tasks that feel interesting, urgent or rewarding may be easier to engage with, while routine activities can require much more effort to begin and complete.

Helpful strategies may include:
• Breaking tasks into smaller steps
• Using timers and reminders
• Building short breaks into your routine
• Adding structure to everyday tasks
• Using body doubling or other accountability techniques

ADHD can be supported through a combination of practical strategies, psychological support and, where appropriate, medication. Specialist ADHD coaching can also help with time management, emotional regulation and everyday routines.

If these patterns are affecting your daily life, book a consultation with our team to discuss how we may be able to help.
