Back-to-school anxiety: when is it normal, and when should you ask for help?

A new school year can bring big emotions. A little nervousness, trouble sleeping the night before school or needing extra reassurance can all be part of a normal adjustment.

But sometimes anxiety goes beyond those first-day butterflies.

Persistent stomach aches or headaches, sleep difficulties, refusing to go to school, frequent crying, irritability or anxiety that continues for several weeks may be signs that your child needs extra support.

The most important thing? Listen without minimising their feelings. Create calm routines, encourage them to talk and avoid putting pressure on them to “just be brave”.

And if anxiety begins to affect school, sleep, friendships or everyday family life, it may be time to speak with a professional.

Back to school in September? It’s a good time to check your child’s vaccinations.

Vaccination requirements and recommendations can vary depending on your child’s age, previous vaccination history and school requirements in the UAE.

Before the new school year, take a moment to review their vaccination record. Some children may need pre-school boosters between ages 4 and 6, while older students may be due for additional vaccines or boosters.

If your child was vaccinated in different countries, don’t worry: bring their records, even if they are in French or another language. Your paediatrician can review their history, identify any missing doses and advise you on the next steps.
