Not every struggle is visible, but every effort counts twice as much.

Living with Developmental Coordination Disorder (dyspraxia) means that everyday tasks: getting dressed, writing, tying shoelaces, keeping up with peers can demand extraordinary focus, patience, and resilience.

This is a glimpse into Noah’s daily world: the perseverance behind small movements, the determination behind “simple” routines, and the quiet victories that often go unnoticed.

Progress is not always fast, but it is always meaningful.

Semantic memory contains facts, concepts, and meanings such as vocabulary, object identification, and general knowledge about the world.
This explains why someone may understand language and recognize objects but struggle to remember recent personal experiences.
Semantic memory plays a key role in communication and learning and is often more resilient than episodic memory in neurological conditions.
Therapeutic approaches often rely on preserved semantic knowledge to support understanding and interaction.

Procedural memory is responsible for skills and habits that become automatic through repetition.
Once learned, these actions can be performed with little conscious effort.
Because procedural memory relies on different brain areas than episodic memory, it is often preserved even when people struggle with recalling recent events.
This is why someone may forget conversations but still know how to ride a bike or play a musical instrument.
In therapy and rehabilitation, preserved procedural memory is often used to support independence and daily routines.

Meet Omar 💭
From the outside, it might look like he’s not listening… not trying… or just being “too active.”
But inside, his brain is moving fast, jumping from one thought to another, all at once.
Omar isn’t choosing to forget, interrupt, or leave things unfinished.
His brain just works differently.
With understanding, structure, and the right support, children like Omar don’t just cope, they thrive.
Let’s shift from “Why isn’t he trying?” to “What does he need?” 🤍

Episodic memory stores personal life experiences — what happened, where it happened, and when it occurred.
This system allows us to mentally travel back in time and relive past events.
Episodic memory depends strongly on the hippocampus, a brain structure that is particularly vulnerable in conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease, epilepsy, and after stroke or brain injury.
When episodic memory is impaired, individuals may repeat questions or forget recent events, even though other memory systems remain intact.

Working memory is the brain’s temporary workspace.
It allows us to hold information briefly while actively using it — such as remembering instructions, doing mental calculations, or staying engaged in a conversation.
When working memory is reduced, individuals may lose track of what they are doing, forget steps quickly, or appear distracted, even when motivation is present.
Difficulties with working memory are commonly seen in attention disorders, learning challenges, brain injury, and during periods of stress or fatigue.

Memory is often talked about as one ability, but in reality, it is made up of multiple systems, each serving a different role.
These systems work together but rely on different brain networks.
This is why someone may forget recent events yet still remember facts or perform familiar skills.
Understanding memory systems allows professionals and families to better interpret behaviors, reduce frustration, and choose appropriate strategies for support.
