Arthritis is not one disease.
The word describes many different conditions that can cause joint pain, stiffness or swelling. These include rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, psoriatic arthritis and gout—and each requires a different approach.
Some clues can help distinguish them:
• Prolonged morning stiffness and persistent swelling may suggest inflammatory arthritis.
• Pain that worsens with repeated use may be more consistent with a mechanical problem such as osteoarthritis.
• Sudden, severe pain in a red, hot joint may occur with gout—but infection must also be considered.
• Psoriasis, eye inflammation or bowel symptoms can sometimes accompany particular forms of inflammatory arthritis.
Blood tests can be helpful, but normal results do not always exclude inflammatory arthritis. Diagnosis depends on the overall pattern of symptoms, examination findings and, when appropriate, imaging or joint-fluid analysis.
The important point is simple: treatment should follow the diagnosis. What helps one type of arthritis may not help another.
