The Mulligan Concept was founded by a master physiotherapist from New Zealand

Brian R. The concept is a completely new approach in assessment and treatment movement disorders. When movement is restricted at any joint in the body it is possibly caused by joint restriction in certain directions. When indicated, a painfree joint mobilization will commonly restore movement at that specific joint and

results in an immediate decrease of pain or other symptoms. The assessment and treatment is unique, because results will be felt and observed immediately. While the method may not be suitable for all the types of movement or pain problems, it seems to help the most common problems encountered at the clinic. In other words, the method is a pain free joint mobilisation that will commonly restore movement deficit and decrease pain within few minutes.

MWM for hand behind the back. A very effective technique to regain ROM for HBB restrictions. Note that if painful abort the technique as it may indicate biceps or labrum injury. You can also try to compress the head of humerus towards the glenoid, for the few it might be more effective. This movement is the last one to typically recover, so if the response is low, no rush.

FRT flexion rotation test to detect los of rotation between C 1-C 2. The test was initially described by Dvorak then studied by others including Toby Hall and others.?The test is the only specific and sensitive test in the literature, that is why it is highly applicable to research relating to the upper cx and more specifically to study the headache population, most of those who suffer from headache and post concussion symptoms will typically have a clear restriction in c1-C2 rotation. Typical treatment is a combination of the Bridge technique followed by C1-2 rotation SNAG. This is also very relevant to treatment of Tinitus and whiplash disorders.

Restriction in plantar flexion is most likely to be related to instability rather than true stiffness. In case of stiffness such as after immobilization etc. you can pull talus forward as described by Mulligan, if you re not sure, push talus backwards as for DF MWM, it’s safe, in case of instability it will feel good, in case of stiffness it will be painful or uncomfortable, that will help you differentiate stiff vs unstable. So if unstable push at talus and ask for active plantar flexion but if stiff do as described by mulligan pull talus passively forward few times and retest. Remember, the ankle is very vulnerable towards plantar flexion movement.
