Here are 6 common signs that may suggest a stomach ulcer (also called a peptic ulcer). These don’t guarantee you have one, but they’re important to notice:
1. Burning stomach pain
A burning or gnawing pain in the upper abdomen is the most common symptom.
Often happens when your stomach is empty
May improve briefly after eating or taking antacids
2. Bloating and feeling full quickly
You might feel uncomfortably full after eating small amounts or notice frequent bloating.
3. Nausea or vomiting
Some people experience nausea, and in more severe cases, vomiting.
4. Unexplained weight loss
Pain or discomfort while eating can lead to loss of appetite and gradual weight loss.
5. Dark or bloody stools
This can be a serious sign of bleeding in the digestive tract.
Stools may look black, tarry, or contain blood
6. Vomiting blood (severe cases)
This is an urgent symptom and needs immediate medical attention.
When to take it seriously
If you notice persistent pain, or especially symptoms like bloody stool or vomiting blood, it’s important to see a doctor quickly.
