When can you return to work or exercise after bariatric surgery? 🏃‍♀️

Recovery after bariatric surgery is gradual, and the timeline for returning to work, exercise, and everyday activities can vary from person to person. Factors such as the type of weight loss surgery, your recovery, and the nature of your work or physical activity all play a role.

In general, patients are encouraged to start with light movement and walking and gradually increase activity as their body heals. Strenuous exercise, heavy lifting, and intense workouts should only be resumed when cleared by your bariatric surgeon.

The goal isn't to rush your recovery - it's to build a safe and sustainable path toward a healthier, more active lifestyle.

Is sleeve gastrectomy right for everyone? Not always.

Sleeve is an effective option for many people. However, severe acid reflux, difficult-to-control diabetes, individual anatomy and other health factors may make a different treatment more appropriate.

The aim is not to choose the most popular procedure—it is to choose the safest and most effective option for you.

A personalised assessment can help determine whether lifestyle support, medication, endoscopy or bariatric surgery best suits your needs.

Thinking about bariatric surgery?

It’s not just about your weight or BMI.

A bariatric consultation is a complete assessment of your weight-loss history, medical conditions, previous weight-loss attempts, and overall health to understand which treatment or bariatric procedure may be right for you.

A single stapler approach in sleeve gastrectomy may sound simpler, but the real difference lies in the precision behind it.

Patient anatomy, surgical planning, staple-line positioning, tissue handling and technical expertise all matter far more than the number of stapler firings alone.

Because in bariatric surgery, the goal isn’t to use fewer staples. It’s to create the right sleeve, safely and precisely.

How much weight will I actually lose?

This is one of the most important questions to ask before considering bariatric surgery. And the answer is: there is no universal number.

The amount of weight you lose after bariatric surgery depends on several factors, including your initial weight, BMI, age, metabolic health, the procedure chosen, eating patterns, activity levels and your body’s individual response to treatment. Patients often expect weight loss to happen at the same pace throughout the journey. In reality, it doesn’t.

Weight loss is generally more noticeable during the early months after surgery, followed by a gradual slowing as your body adapts. There may also be periods where your weight plateaus before progress resumes. This is why I encourage patients not to compare their results with someone else’s.

For some patients, that may also mean better control of type 2 diabetes, blood pressure, sleep apnoea, mobility and overall quality of life. Individual outcomes vary. The right procedure and expected weight-loss range should always be discussed after a detailed medical assessment.

After 35+ years in surgery, one lesson remains constant: good bariatric surgery begins long before the operation.

The right decision, the right procedure, surgical precision and careful anticipation of risk all play a role in achieving meaningful long-term outcomes.

But surgery is only one part of the journey. Sustainable results require structured follow-up, nutritional support, physical activity and behavioural changes.

“Doctor, how do I know if I am a candidate for bariatric surgery?”

Bariatric surgery is not recommended based on weight alone. During a consultation, I assess your BMI, obesity-related health conditions, previous weight-loss efforts, medications, lifestyle and overall health to determine whether surgery is appropriate for you.

Generally, bariatric surgery may be considered when BMI is 40 or above, or 35 or above with obesity-related conditions such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension or obstructive sleep apnoea. In selected patients with a BMI of 30 to 34.9, surgery may also be an option, particularly when metabolic disease remains inadequately controlled despite appropriate medical treatment.

However, eligibility is only the beginning. I also consider your long-term weight-management history, potential health risks, nutritional status and readiness to follow the lifestyle and dietary changes required after surgery.

My goal is not simply to help you lose weight. It is to determine whether bariatric surgery can be a safe, appropriate and effective treatment for your obesity and related health concerns.

If you are considering bariatric surgery, a personalised medical assessment is the best way to understand whether you are a suitable candidate.
