One People, One History, One Geography: The Durand Line and the Historical Contradiction Between Colonial Cartography and the Natural Unity of Nations
The Durand Line, throughout history, was neither the product of the free will of peoples nor a reflection of the natural logic of geography. Rather, it is an imposed outcome of colonial policies shaped by the geopolitical imperatives of nineteenth-century imperial powers. This demarcation was drawn without the consent or meaningful consultation of the people concerned and bears no organic relationship to their authentic identities, historical continuity, or civilizational realities. From the perspective of international legal reasoning, agreements forged under coercion, pressure, or colonial supremacy remain perpetually subject to questions of legitimacy. Consequently, this artificial and provisional boundary cannot be regarded as a sacrosanct or immutable frontier, but rather as a historical by-product of a specific political epoch.
Within the contemporary conceptual framework of international order, such lines are not merely cartographic markings; they are expected to represent the will of peoples, historical justice, and social reality. For this reason, the line remains, by its very nature, a subject of continuous political, legal, and intellectual contestation, rather than a final or irreversible truth.
On both sides of this boundary lives a population that, by all historical standards, constitutes a continuous human, cultural, and social continuum. The language is shared, the culture is common, the faith and religious outlook are unified, and historical memory reflects a centuries-long shared trajectory. What binds these people is not geography alone, but a profound web of social practices, traditions, values, and emotional affinities that cannot be severed by artificial delineations. Here, ethnic unity is not a rhetorical abstraction but a deeply embedded sociological reality manifested through intermarriage, migration, shared marketplaces, tribal configurations, and collective resistance histories.
Denying this reality stands in contradiction to the socio-historical logic of nations, as nations are defined not by maps but by lived collective existence. Therefore, these people are not to be construed as two separate nations divided by geography, but rather as part of a broader civilizational and human continuum that has preserved its identity across time.
In modern international politics, the legitimacy of any border is not determined solely by the historical moment of its drawing, but also by its sustained acceptance, the will of the people, and its relationship to regional stability. Artificial borders, even when long established, do not escape continuous philosophical and political scrutiny. History demonstrates that boundaries originating in colonial structures are persistently subject to reassessment, political revision, and, in some cases, transformation. Nations are not subordinate to geography; rather, geography is shaped by the necessities of human societies.
In the evolving philosophy of international relations, stability is not grounded exclusively in coercive power, but in justice, consent, and mutual harmony. Accordingly, this boundary remains not an eternal truth, but a contingent political construct whose legitimacy continues to be questioned over time.
For the strategic stability of the region’s future, the most essential principle is the acknowledgment of reality and the recognition of shared identities, rather than the perpetuation of artificial divisions. Populations bound by historical, cultural, and linguistic unity naturally provide fertile ground for cooperation, mutual understanding, and collective progress. Rigid borders tend to amplify conflict potential, whereas trust, economic interdependence, and cultural cohesion constitute the true guarantees of sustainable stability.
Strategic thinking therefore demands that historical realities not be ignored, but rather serve as the foundation for cooperation, flexible relations, and regional understanding. The right of peoples to self-identification remains a fundamental principle, and history demonstrates that artificial partitions cannot indefinitely withstand the will of populations. The future, therefore, calls not for confrontation, but for harmony, recognition of reality, and collective human advancement.
If I were elected President of Afghanistan, my first decree would be grounded in the revival of national identity and the practical realization of historical justice. Within this framework, I would initiate an urgent and formal process of issuing hereditary identity documentation for all Afghans residing beyond the Durand Line under the unified national identity of “Afghan,” recognizing them as an inseparable part of a shared society defined by history, language, culture, and common values.
This initiative would not be merely an administrative measure, but a manifestation of restoring historical continuity, reconnecting fragmented identity, and acknowledging a human reality long disrupted by artificial borders. The policy would be justified within the framework of international principles governing the right to identity, freedom of self-recognition, and the protection of human dignity, rather than on the basis of confrontation or conflict.
The objective would be to ensure that a people who, in essence, constitute a single civilizational and historical body regain their legal and administrative recognition as a unified community, thereby laying the foundation for a renewed national and strategic process oriented toward trust, unity, and a shared future.
