Afghan Family Guidance Association

Afghan Family Guidance Association ABOUT AFGHAN FAMILY GUIDANCE ASSOCIATION – AFGA Afghan Family Guidance Association (AFGA) is one of the oldest non-governmental organizations in Afghanistan.

AFGA was set up in 1968, with the aim of providing families, women specially, with sexual and reproductive health counselling and contraceptives. As the country was engulfed by the civil war, AFGA had to cease its activities temporarily, reopening in 2002. In the post-Taliban Afghanistan, AFGA worked alongside the Ministry of Public Health, delivering reproductive and sexual health counselling and

services to the Afghan people. Additionally, the organization initiated and implemented activities that empowered women and youth to learn more about and take decisions regarding their sexual and reproductive health.

Following the devastating flash floods in Nuristan Province, the AFGA Emergency Response Team (Central-ERT), supported by UNFPA, deployed a Joint Assessment Team along with other humanitarian partners to evaluate urgent needs and ensure the continuity of life-saving reproductive health services through the MOVE-implemented Family Health House. To address immediate vulnerabilities, the team successfully coordinated the distribution of 92 Dignity Kits to flood-affected households, providing essential hygiene and health support to women and girls. This critical response underscores AFGA’s unwavering commitment to working alongside humanitarian partners to deliver timely, coordinated, and dignified emergency assistance across Afghanistan, especially in crises.

In Afghanistan’s most isolated "white areas," medical care is often non-existent. The AFGA IPPF Respond Project bridges this gap by bringing life-saving healthcare directly to the women, girls, and children who need it most. Across seven provinces, a dedicated network of 15 Family Health Houses, a Mother and Newborn Hospital, and 8 ultrasound units provides a lifeline of reproductive care, nutrition counseling, and emotional support. For these underserved communities, this initiative is not just healthcare; it is survival.
