Most capital that comes into a growing company comes with a timeline. There is a fund cycle, a defined period for growth and, eventually, an exit.

Africa imports more than 70% of the medicines it consumes, while producing only around 30% of the world’s pharmaceuticals.

Most of the time, that dependency stays in the background. Supplies arrive, systems keep running, and the vulnerability is easy to overlook.

COVID changed that. When global supply chains came to a halt, African health systems found themselves dependent on decisions made elsewhere. At factories they did not own and in countries that were prioritizing their own populations.

Building local healthcare capacity takes time, investment, and coordination among governments, regulators, and private sector players. There is no quick fix.

But it starts with a commitment to build.

Malaria remains a major healthcare challenge across Africa. Access to reliable diagnostics is key to identifying and following up cases effectively.

Yapama, part of JETA’s healthcare portfolio, supports malaria diagnosis and follow-up in public and private hospitals across Angola.

In Angola, 14 of the 49 malaria RDT lots validated are from a brand distributed by Yapama. Yapama has also introduced a solution using digital microscopy and AI for quantitative diagnosis.

As digital access expands, barriers such as transaction fees, limited access to credit and reliance on cash remain. Yet mobile payments are already becoming part of everyday life, including among taxi drivers and other small businesses.

With digital payment processing 35 million instant transfers in 2025, the shift is underway.

The next challenge is turning connectivity into real financial inclusion, through access, trust and confidence.
