Three surgeries.
Not one.
Not two.
Three open heart surgeries before most children ever start kindergarten.
That is the path for Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome. That is what these families sign up for — not because they have a choice — but because it is the only road that exists.
Let's talk about it.
Surgery One — The Norwood.
This happens within the first few days of life. Your baby is days old. And they are already going into open heart surgery.
The Norwood rebuilds the aorta using the existing pulmonary artery. It creates a new pathway for blood to reach the body. It gives a heart that was never built to survive — a fighting chance.
It is one of the most complex surgeries in all of pediatric medicine.
And these babies go through it before they have even had a chance to come home.
Surgery Two — The Glenn.
Around four to six months old.
The Glenn redirects blood flow from the upper body directly to the lungs — bypassing the heart entirely for that portion of circulation. It takes some of the pressure off the single ventricle that is carrying everything.
Four to six months old.
Still in infant car seats.
Still in onesies with snaps.
Already on their second open heart surgery.
Surgery Three — The Fontan.
Between ages two and four.
The Fontan completes the rerouting. Now all the blood returning from the body goes directly to the lungs without passing through the heart first. The single right ventricle — the one that was never supposed to do this job — now pumps blood only to the body.
It is an extraordinary reconstruction of how a heart functions.
And it is not the end of the road.
It is the beginning of lifelong management. Lifelong monitoring. A relationship with cardiology that never ends because a Fontan circulation is not a normal circulation — and the heart carrying it needs to be watched closely for the rest of its life.
Three surgeries.
Three recoveries.
Three times a parent hands their child to a surgical team and waits.
And they do it.
Because there is no other way.
Because their child deserves every single chance this world can give them.
Because love does not flinch — even when it has to walk through the hardest doors imaginable.
