My mentor Ron once threw a pen at me across a boardroom.
It was December.
I was working in software sales and we weren’t booking meetings or winning any new business.
He asked me why I thought that was.
I said.
- It’s December
- Nobody’s even working
- There’s no business to be done
So he picked up a pen and threw it at me.
And told me I’d already given up.
Then he gave me another way to look at it.
If the whole market is downing tools
and every one of your competitors has decided
it isn’t happening until January, that’s the time to push.
So I worked the rest of December and booked
a load of meetings.
And I came into the office between Christmas and New Year,
when almost everyone else had taken it off.
Most of my calls went to voicemail because nobody was in.
But the people who did pick up
gave me twenty or thirty minutes,
because they were sat there with nothing to do either.
He was right.
I was being defeatist.
Be careful what you accept about what’s possible right now,
whether that’s coming from the market,
the industry or the people around you.
